We wanted to see one of the islands off Stone Town and bought the tour (15 € each) from an "official" tour organisor (from the Palace Museum). The only thing on the island that was interesting was the giant turtles that you could see and feed (after having paid the entrance fee to the island, which was ot included in the "tour" price). Otherwise there is practically nothing to see or do. We thought it was not worth the price. So go only if you want to see the turtles and if you get a cheap boat fare.

Good trip enjoyed by wife and myself. Lots of tourists though.

Fun and interesting seeing the giant tortoises.

Interesting tour, quite informative.

Ok to say you have been. Would we go back? No.

Again if you have time it may be worth a visit but I wouldn't go out of the way to do it. A bit "touristy" and the tortoises don't look that well looked after, however, if the tourists stopped going.....

The island is charming and interesting. The history is fascinating and the tortoise are just cool. Also a great place to find cool shells if you come early enough. There is also good snorkeling right off the island.

I came there with a group, short and comfortable boat ride. It was wonderful time spent with peaceful and some cuddly tortoises followed with a warm dip in a clean and azure ocean

Quite mediocre place, nothing much to see, except for the gigantic turtles. We expected to see and learn more about the prison. This place wasn't worth the time and boat trip.

Did this trip after walking tour of Stone Town. 20/30 min boat ride from Stone Town into island. Tortoises amazing some extremely old, chance to feed and touch them. Chance to have a sea swim which was very welcoming as extremely hot day.
Worth a visit.

Okay, if you have nothing better to do for a few hours whilst in Stone Town its a nice boat ride out and back but the experience on the island is underwhelming. The turtles are impressive creatures but now that they are fenced in (they were free roaming on the island when I visited in 1995) and basically sit around eating celery and crapping, its not too interesting beyond the first few minutes. The rest of the island is now basically an expensive hotel with the small remains of the original prison/quarantine facility. Take a pass.

If you are staying in Stone town I would recommend to take a half day trip to look at tortoise. If you also want to stay on the beach and swim over there you can take a whole day trip. It is very interesting to see tortoise that is so huge and old.
