Work has brought me to Zanzibar twice during the last 8 moths. Both time I stayed at this wonderful hotel with the best atmosphere and friendly, helpful staff. They make you feel at home; The ladies in the reception, concierge Big Joe & his crew, the restaurant staff. All great people. Asante sana!

We stayed for just one night in a room with a wraparound balcony, including a hammock. The lobby gives you sense of what buildings there must have been like in the colonial area - dark wood, beautiful tile, high ceilings with fans. Check in, which included a refreshing towel and drink, was fairly efficient. We didn't spend much time in the hotel or use many amenities, but we did have breakfast, in a room that was practically on the water. As noted by another reviewer, the breakfast was not special, but certainly sufficient.

an experience about taking a coffee on the terrace as a passer by.
We wanted to have a cup of coffee and sat on the terrace. The waiter listened to our order and immediately said when he learned that we were not staying at the hotel that the coffee would cost us 13000 shilling. This is not cheap but comparable to the price of coffee in many higher end establishments in Stone Town. When he brought the coffe he indicated, quite unnecessarily again that this would cost us 7 dollar. Overall not very hospitable and the capucinno was not very good either!

The Serena at Zanzibar has a fantastic location by the sea. But what stands apart is the hospitality shown by the staff. They are super friendly and helpful and we got superb guidance. More importantly, they always took care to ensure that we were not ripped off by 'tourist rates'. The one time that we did not take their advice since we had already booked a guide called Khalifa recommended by someone else was a regrettable experience. If you are ever staying at the Serena, know that you can always rely on the staff and their guidance. The hotel is very close to Stone Town and other attractions. We also got a complimentary trip to their beach resort in Mangipwani beach, which was excellent!

Room tip: Rooms facing the sea and pool are great
