Had the most amazing stay at the New Churchill Cottage that sleeps 4 with friends we had so much fun and learned a lot from the most friendly and helpful staff. To think all three of the great men Churchill Gandhi and Botha were in the same place on the Hill. We will be back.

Room Tip: Churchill cottage beautiful

We stayed 2 nights - and thoroughly enjoyed Three Tree Hills. Our cabin was pretty ‘rustic’ but it had all the essentials and was very quiet and comfortable. The views from the cabin were wide-ranging and included part of the neighbouring reserve. Upon our arrival (lunch-time) we took up the offer of an ‘afternoon guided game walk’ around the reserve - complete with armed warden! We ended the game walk back at Three Tree Hill with a deckchair, drink and a beautiful sunset overlooking the reservoir. The game walk turned out to be the highlight of our stay - and we would really recommend it. The food was plentiful and varied, and the breakfast was specially cooked to our requirements. We also enjoyed the self-guided walks around the grounds.

We had a great two-night stay at Three Tree Hill. It's very friendly, relaxed and laid back. There are wonderful walks on the property with views across to the Tugela River and Spioenkop. Next door is a nature reserve with wildlife including rhinos, giraffe and zebra - we did a guided walk with Cheryl which was fascinating: you have a completely different perspective compared with a game drive sitting in a vehicle. The battlefield tour of Spioenkop with Ron is not to be missed. He is the font of all knowledge when it comes to the Boer - or South African war. Thank you all.

At the start of our South African holiday we spent three nights at Three Tree Hill and truly enjoyed every moment. The other reviewers have talked about the welcome from Simon and Cheryl and the warm feeling there is but what impressed us so much is that it is all in balance. There is always someone to speak to and to help if you want it but there is also the option for absolute privacy when in your self-contained cottage you would not know there was anyone else in the world!

Strongly recommended are the optional tours. Ron took us to the site of the Battle of Spioenkop and not only made it alive but also put it into the context of South African history which will enable us to appreciate the country more completely. He is SO knowledgable and seems truly interested in the people he is escorting as well as his subject matter. This must be hard sometimes but you would never know. We felt most privileged to have spent time with him.

The rhino walk with Simon is not to be missed either. I have recently had a knee replacement and he measured his pace to mine so I was able to enjoy the experience without discomfort. Sundowners with Melanie, the excellent food in companionable surroundings all made this one of the best stays ever. Thank you so much to the whole team for allowing us to be part of your family, albeit for too short a time.

Room Tip: They are all excellent

We stayed here for two nights in October while touring KZN. The Lodge is set on top of a hill and from the individual cabins you have a splendid view over the valley to Spienkop, the site of one of the most infamous defeats suffered by the British Army in the second Zulu War. While visiting the battlefield site was the main purpose of our visit, one could quite easily have spent a couple of days here just chilling out, without visiting a battlefield. The main lodge is centrally situated on the site with individual cabins set out along the ridge of the hill a short walk from the main lodge. We had cabin number 6, which was fine with the aforementioned splendid views. Meals are taken in the main lodge with all the guests sitting at a long communal table - you can have an individual table if you so wish. The food was excellent although the menu was set for each dinner so if you hadn't liked what was on offer you might have been a bit stuck. The whole ambience, including the pre-dinner drinks, was like going to a friend's for a large dinner party. We used the resident guide, Ron, to give us an excellent tour of the Spienkop battlefield site and an explanation of the battle and the Anglo-Boer War. i would not hesitate to recommend this lodge. If you want full time Wifi, you will be disappointed as it is only turned on during the mornings, which could be a bit tiresome.
