“Honeymoon Stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 March 2012

I had went on my Honeymoon trip to Mauritius and stayed in Casuarina resort in for a week; the resort was best in its services and guest satisfaction; staff support exceeded the expected; located 100 mts away from the beach and is a very beautiful resort; the path from reception to the rooms is very beautiful and romantic; only options for Vegetarians are nill and the resort has to work over the same. I stayed in bunglow of the resort which was amazing in itself and very beautifully made..
Thanks Casuarina Resort for making our stay so romantic and memorable..

The Hotel Casuarina exceeded our expectations in terms of the quality of its accommodation and service. All the staff from the managers to the maintenance and grounds staff were unfailingly friendly, helpful & efficient. This is a great strength and they are all to be congratulated on their efforts & hard work. The hotel website does not do justice to the reality of the hotel and we would suggest that the management look at how this can be improved to reflect more accurately what is available.
We were on an all inclusive package, others who were not found the drinks expensive. At first we found the need to sign for every meal and drinks a little disconcerting but soon got used to it. Perhaps a better alternative arrangement could be introduced for all inclusive guests?
We enjoyed the food and think that the variety and choice at all meals was good. There was certainly no problem with choosing either the european or asian dishes or indeed in mixing the two. The quality of the food was good and the catering staff went out of their way to provide special foods on request for those who fancied dishes that were not on the menu. The key is simply to ask for what you would like. The chefs and restaurant managers are always available to monitor quality and listen to guests comments and requests.
Our room was simply but adequately furnished, clean and comfortable.The maid service was exemplary. The way the accommodation is layed out within the beautiful gardens is very clever so that rooms do not directly overlook each other and provide lovely views. Being solidly built there was no problem with noise disturbance from other rooms. or from the road.Some rooms have adjustable air conditioning units but ours did not and we would have appreciated being able to turn the aircon down at night when it was a little cooler, however, this was not a big problem.
The beach nearest to the hotel is easily accessible even though this involves crossing the road. A pelican type crossing has been provided just outside the main entrance for guests to use to cross safely and this works very well. During our stay there was a bit of a scramble for beach loungers and parasols and perhaps the hotel could look at providing more of these. There is certainly enough room on the beach to do this. The watersports activities were good and those included in the package were readily available.
We must recommend Veejay who works from the beach to offer tailor made tours for guests. We took a trip to visit the Isle aux Cerfs and thought that we had excellent service and value for money. We can recommend him for his efficient and friendly approach, do give it a try!
The hotel caters for a cosmopolitan range of guests and we enjoyed meeting people from all over the world. The hotel staff treat all with the same courtesy and respect regardless of nationality or age. Well done!!
Thank you for a relaxing and most enjoyable holiday.

Casuarina resort is situated at north island in Mauritius which is a 90-120 minutes drive from International airport. The path from reception to the rooms is very beautiful and romantic.Before anyone decides to travel to Mauritius should know that country is very expensive and apart from the money that you have paid for the package one will need to spend some 15000-20000 Indian rupees per person additionally. Coming back to the resort, the cost for spa or massage is around 7000 INR per couple in case you wish to avail this facility. The beach next to the hotel is damn beautiful. At the beach there is a restaurant where u can enjoy drinks and food which will be charged to your hotel bill or you can pay cash as well. First I will tell you about different activities and their cost in Mauritius.

->Parasailing (5-10 mins)+ Speedboat ride (45 mins)= Around 2800 INR per couple
->Under water walk (10-15 mins) = Around 3500- 4000 INR per couple+ 1500 INR for photography (optional)
->Walk with the lion (10-15 mins)+ Lion safari+ Quadbiking (1 hr)+ Taxi from hotel to Casela park= Around 8000- 10000 INR per couple
->Fly fish = Around 3500 per couple

The buffet breakfast at the hotel has different foods but basically fruits, omelets, boiled eggs, Bread jams, corn flakes, different juices, coffee, cakes are good and eatable. Water is chargeable at breakfasts and dinners which costs around 170 INR per bottle of 1 litter.
At dinners there is variety of food available. Indian food is good but is little different than what we get here in India.
I gave 7 clothes for laundry which costed around 2800 INR, so never use laundry facilities.
Every day after dinner there are live performances at the pool side. Once we enjoyed Mauritian dance and on another day beautiful Indian classical dance and on the rest of the days there were band performances where you can put your step forward and enjoy romantic couple dances. Once I asked the Guitarist to let me play Guitar for my wife which he happily agreed to.
The most unusual thing I experienced is if you order a water bottle of around 170 INR at the room service, they will charge an extra INR 300 for the delivery at your room.
All n all it was a good experience. All the best

I had read some reviews of Casuarina that were not very impressive. However, as a 3 star budget hotel i guess it is adequate in its comfort, neatness, helpful staff, etc. What you pay is what you get. So, if you are looking for 5 star treatment then hop across to the Sheraton or a Sofitel or some such resort. For a budget traveler Casuarina offers a fairly decent accommodation. A place where you can come back to relax after some sight seeing. Nice swimming pool with jacuzzi. Food was fairly decent but did lack some variety which for a 3 star is ok i guess. Overall pleasant experience. Fairly good facilities to chill out on the beach as well.

We went to this resort in the last week on Jan 2012.

There were around 12 Indian couples at that time in the resort and all of us faced similar issues:

1) No early check-ins: We reached the hotel at around 12 Noon and had to wait for around one and half hour before we got the room, there were 2 couples already waiting for around half an hr before us to get the room. The reception people kept making one excuse or the other, it was only when we made a noise the Manager gave the room telling that they are giving the room early. The standard reply from the Manager was that all rooms are booked... Later I checked the resort and asked the room service... many rooms were available.

We requested for a sea-facing room and every person we asked had a different answer. The answers I got were:
a) The rooms are allotted are on first-come-first served basis and right now all rooms are booked.
b) You have to inform the resort earlier.
c) It should be mentioned on the booking form.
d) The best one, we do not have any sea-facing rooms.

I am not sure about the real reason, but the reason which came out strongest was that the resort is biased and these rooms are allocated to people with fair complexion (read Europeans, Americans etc...)

2) Rooms: The rooms are very small, they have 6'x4' bed (less than even a Queen size i.e. 6'x5' which is the minimum standard in hotels / resorts) after which there is just enough space for one person to move around. Throughout our entire 4 nights stay, we never got a good sleep and I almost fell off the bed one night. The walls were not painted properly and even the floors were not neatly done... around 3 inches on the sides was rough and cemented giving the entire room a very bad look. We spotted lizards almost daily and one day even a cockraoch.

The good part was that the rooms had hair-dryer and full length mirror, bathroom was clean i.e. basics were okay. However, a 3-star property has to be much better. We researched the other resorts in the vicinity, the rooms were better and the price cheaper.

3) Food: We had booked on half-board (means including breakfast and dinner) and there are not many shops around (the nearest shop is around 20 mins walk), so we had to rely on hotel food. We are vegetarians, the breakfast had nothing much for us, we had to eat just bread-butter and not so tasty fruits. The dinner was pathetic for the first two days, then I had a chat with the chef and he said that he'll try his best... the next two days the food was better than the average food we would find in India. Every couple appreciated the food in the last two days.

We also had the priviledge of having the lunch on the first day, first of all there were only 2 veggie options available, either a pizza or pasta, all others not available (not even a simple veg sandwich)... I ordered a pizza, to my surprise this was the first pizza I had with big pieces of bottle gourds & pumpkins and more than twice the cost of that in Pizza Hut.

4) Entertainment: There was silly music at one end where not many people sit for all nights except one when three people came to every table and were singing songs and playing instruments. Though we didn't understand the songs, we enjoyed their spirit and enthusiasm. One of the staff members, Daniel was good and chirpy... mentioning his name here since he arranged the musicians to our table out-of-turn.

5) Check-out Time: The standard check-out time as per our booking was 12 Noon and the reception staff kept saying 11 AM. The Hotel Manager Shiva though keeps on saying that "we are a family and I want to help you", but in reality he does not. After the check out time, they throw their family out of the room, even though the rooms are available.

They did oblige us an extra hr i.e. check-out at 12 Noon saying that they are doing a favour to us as we are their guests. While clearing the bills when I pointed out that the check-out time is 12 Noon in the booking form, they had no answer. The other Manager (I think her name was Shivani) was nice though and was trying to help as best as she could.

While choosing this resort we had read some of the comments on this site, people had mentioned this resort is average but the staff is good. In our experience, only a handful of staff members were good and were very helpful also... rest can be easily ignored. The road on which this resort is situated, had several other hotels / resorts... I am sure that you can find a better one.

Direction11, General Manager at Casuarina Resort & Spa, responded to this review, 3 April 2012
We thank you for your comments and would like to point out the following:-

1.As per our contractual agreement with the Tour Operators, the room must be made available for check-in as from14h00 and guests should check out of the room 11h00 latest on their departure date.
>When the hotel is operating at very high occupancy, it is very difficult to please all our guests who are checking in and have the rooms available before 14h00.
>As per our contractual agreement with the Tour Operators, we cannot guarantee any sea-view room to our guests due to a limited number of rooms facing the sea. We do our utmost to give them satisfaction; however we cannot allocate all our guests sea-view rooms!!!
>We treat all our guests equally and they are provided with the same same service and attention; please rest assured that we do not have any prejudice or show any kind of preference towards a particular segment.

2.We receive overall satisfactory comments from our guests as regards the standard of our rooms; the lizards called “geckos” form part of the Mauritian fauna and are small, clean and inoffensive animals. They are being kept as pets by some Mauritian families.

3.The vegetarian Indian food for the half-board dinner is provided in accordance with your Tour Operator, consisting of 4 varieties of vegetables, grains, faratas, ti pouris, rice and guests can also chose from the vegeterian meals from the European buffet.
We have prepared specially for you at dinner (and at no extra cost!) some meals to meet your expectations; as for lunch, the pizza is a vegetarian one and is made from fresh vegetables as per the price mentioned on our Carte. It is not in the hotel policy to compare our prices nor our products with those from the local Fast Foods.
Moreover, we informed you during your stay that you were the only guests of Indian nationality who disliked the Indian Buffet contrary to those of Indian nationality who complimented us for our foods.

4.Our musical entertainment program are thematics, ie. varying every night, in harmony with our live band, musical groups and additional entertainement such as Sega Show, Oriental show and musical trio. We appreciate the fat that you mentioned the name of one team member – Daniel who has been helpful towards you.

5.Contractually, the room must be vacated at latest 11:00 a.m; should you wish to keep the room until your departure, you are granted a chargeable late check-out depending upon availability of course.Shiva, our Front Office Supervisor, did explain the situation in a polite and courteous manner and the whole team and staff have been formally trained to provide with the best of service.
