The Southold Beach Motel is as close to cabin camping as a motel can get. For me and my girlfriend, that's fine. If you expect the polished amenities of a high-line hotel, then that is the investment that you should make.
My girlfriend and I stayed for three nights this past week. I had read the reviews after the fact of making a reservation. So, I wasn't sure what to expect. Here's what we got:
*A clean, small room with a TV, cable, a kitchenette (under counter fridge, sink, microwave, hot plate & some cookware, coffee maker and some plate ware, drinking glasses & coffee mugs)
*A firm queen sized bed. I always bring my own sheets to any hotel/motel
*Standard amount of closet space.
*Standard dresser with 3 drawers & a open storage shelf instead of the top drawer, which was convenient for our toiletries.
*Small bathroom with a shower stall. We bring our own soaps/conditioners too.
*Pleasant outdoor seating area with a patio table and umbrella.
*1 minute walk to the beach across the street. (The beach is stones & sand throughout, buy some aqua socks with a cushioned bottom and you'll have no problem trekking across the beach or in the water, which is also stone & sand)
*Water temp in late August 80F and mild current at all times - no 4 foot tall surf crashing)
*8 minutes from Greenport, 25 minutes from Orient Point
Chrissy, the manager was pleasant and attentive.
It appears as though they are working to update the rooms with fresh paint, new flooring & some light decor.
The only drawbacks:
* WiFi shuts off at night. That should be changed or fixed.
*It's a tight space, but there is a backyard and a mile of beach, literally, 1 minutes across the street.
*Front of motel is close to the road & traffic is heavy thru the day and steady at night. If you're a light sleeper, request a Garden Room.
Lodging anywhere is not going to be inexpensive, especially not in a destination point. While this is not the Ritz Carlton or a Hyatt Grand - it is nicely situated in a terrific area to relax and take in the Long Island Sound and any points on the East End within a reasonably short drive.
