There is not much in the way of dining in the Pawling area, but Karen’s is a real bright spot. It is only open for breakfast and lunch and is really diner type fare but is extremely good. The parking lot is usually packed and you might have to wait for a table around noon. Karen’s is very popular with the locals (some eat there every day) and also attracts a lot of business from traffic on Route 22.
Karen just updated her menu and she has some original creations that are quite good. Her version of the Philly steak sandwich with horseradish and pepper jack cheese was very spicy and good. And you can’t go wrong with the cheeseburger deluxe. Breakfast is available all day (she closes at 3:00 PM) and there is a nice selection of omelets.
The kitchen is tiny (the whole place is not very big) so you sometimes have to wait a few minutes for your meal, but it is worth it. If you are from the area there will probably be someone there you know. Karen will sometimes circulate and chat with people she knows and check on how your meal is.
The prices are good, the food is good and the atmosphere is friendly. Karen’s is a great option for an informal meal.
