Santorini was not in our plan when we visited Athens last May after retirement, but was persuaded to go by an excellent tourist owner (we thought) when we walked in the Parliament Square, and we remembered what our kids said about this island.
The trip would have been perfect if not for the sleepless night we had. We checked into room 23 and were totally absorbed by the beautiful scenery that met our eyes, on way down the terrace to the room, through the window on the wooden door etc. What we did not realize was a bar sitting right on top of this room.
We went to bed at ten, but could not get any sleep at all and we complained to front desk asking. No help. The bar was SCHEDULED TO CLOSE AT THREE IN THE MORNING, which it did but only at 3:20.
The nest morning we questioned why we were assigned such a room, we got the unsolicited compliment that we looked young. The hotel was not full at the time we checked in as we noticed a young couple arrived after us and they looked fresh that morning.
What added salt to our wounds was when we had breakfast everybody just walked into the room and nobody asked for room keys. We wouldn't mind showing room keys as this is the norm everywhere else. But when we were about to finish, we were the only couple being asked openly for room keys in front of all other guests.
We made a formal complaint to the hotel owner (whom we later found out was exactly the same person which asked for our room key). He offered a free stay for us if we would visit the place again in 2012, and judging from what happened in Greece and western Europe the return trip looks unlikely.
