I booked this hotel, stupidly, thinking I had booked old Oia's houses which is a completely different place. Nearer the time for my holiday, I wanted to check to see if any update reviews had been posted since I booked 6 months earlier. Realised then that i'd booked a place with o reviews. With growing alarm, I searched the Internet, Tripadvisor, Expedia, Hotels.com, ebookers, all the usual outlets....not one single review on Ois's Houses. Not one! After a 24 hour journey, without sleep we (4 of us) arrived at Oia, exhausted at 7.30am. By 9am, after almost everyone directed us to Old Oia's houses, we found our destination. The staff were very nice and kindly agreed to let us check in early. We were then shown to the room (self catering studio) and it was extremely basic with a very ancient bedspread on the bed, no toiletries, not even hand soap in the toilet. We had to accept the room as we needed sleep. After we woke, we started looking for something more suitable straight away and the staff had kindly helped us by making phone calls etc, but absolutely nothing was available (except one property @ €3500 per room per night) Oia is split in 2 parts, one side has the best scenic views & the other side has the sunset views so for the best holiday you need to book somewhere overlooking the Aegean sea & then pop over to a bar/restaurant for the sunset in the evening. Our room was on the sunset side. We resigned ourselves to the room but as we are in our mid forties, & this was a special treat holiday we were very disapointed. One of my 'must haves' when booking a hotel in a hot country is access to a swimming pool. On several websites there is reference to "swimming nearby" included with staying in Oia's houses. This actually means a very small public swimming pool about 15 mins walk away. All the pools on the island are small due to the geographical limits but have limited people using them unlike the public pool. On our second day, the staff offered us a different room and while still quite basic, it was much better and we stayed here for the rest of the week. It had a delightful little balcony with awesome sunset views (the staff told us that they did not have sunset views!)
The bathrooms were good & the rooms were serviced every day. It seems with the first apartment the lack of toiletries was an oversight as showergel & soap were provided every day afterwards. All the beds in both apartments were so uncomfortable, we all had stiff necks after the week. The cooking facilities comprised of a 2 ring electric cooker but no kettle to boil water for tea/coffee. There was a good fridge in each room. Also worth noting that the apartments had no aircon so we melted at night. The apartments are also listed as either 3 or 4 star depending on what website you book through. I would say they are 2 star.
Overall, they were ok. A younger group would have a great time here. The location is excellent & staff very helpful. Also free wifi is provided. Our biggest disappointment stemmed from having had much higher expectations.
