We travelled as a couple (29 and 34) and stayed for 2 weeks from the end of June.
The hotel is lovely with really nicely decorated apartments which really are terrific. The flat screen TVs are a real bonus and there are a few channels that are in English including a couple that play films and one that seemed to play back to back CSI!
Our apartment had 1 double and 1 twin room. A bathroom with a bath with shower over and another bathroom with a shower. The showers are not properly temperature controlled so be careful with small children as they could get scalded.
The kitchen has a kettle and supply of tea bags and coffee. They also provide water when you arrive. After that you can bring your own back from the bars. Milk is difficult to get hold of - but if you ask at the bars they will oblige. Milk sticks or little pots in the room would make a big difference. In case it matters to you the tea is Lipton yellow label ... Awful stuff I think but luckily I had packed my own.
The rooms are cleaned to a high standard and the staff are really nice. The grounds are well kept and there are beautiful flowers.
The location is ok. The beach is nice but you cannot really bathe in the sea. It is pretty dangerous (mostly a red flag) and lots of rocks so getting in would be inconvenient at best. The pools were very good.
The animation team were good with nice personalities, but did not follow the schedule! They also all seemed to disappear in our second week. Activities: water aerobics, water polo, beach volleyball, football. All well done. If you asked you could get the beach boules to play with. Also volleyballs etc.
That said, there wasnt much to do and we found that 2 weeks dragged a lot! We went on a couple of excursions both booked at the beach hut. The snorkelling trip was the highlight. They pick you up from the hut, take you to santa Maria where you go on a rib boat to a wreck. We saw lots of great fish and swam with an adult green turtle. Cost 20 euros per person. Beach buggies were fun but be warned they do take you on the road which was frankly quite unsafe and they had told us it was all off road. Santa Maria was a bit harrowing. It is a low income country and the non cape verdians that have come over to try and make money seemed desperate for a sale ... To the point of following you everywhere.
Food was ok as far as all inclusive holidays go. But after 2 weeks it had become very repetitive. If you have food allergies or intolerances I would suggest avoiding this hotel. I was served cheese 3 times even though I had explained that I was allergic. The staff are trying and one of the managers did put a lot of effort into trying to make sure I was catered for, however even with her help I was still served cheese. If you are already booked to go - email ahead to make them aware of any dietary requirements. If you ask for something plain in spices then they will try their best. The waterside was our favourite - try the maki roll - it was yummy.
The beach bar has some good evening entertainment, apart from the 20 strong drum troop which was ear bleedingly loud. It was great though to see local dancers and musicians rather than reps doing cheesy holiday entertainment.
Some more variety in music when the disco starts at the beach bar would be good!
The late bar was a flop. It looked beautiful but no one really went there. The music was dreadful and service not really friendly.
Mosquitos were out in force when we were there. Take repellant!!
It would be really good if the hotel provided just a few more distractions ... Perhaps a pool table or two, a table tennis table and even a little crazy golf would be good.
Hope the review helps!
