“If you're looking for a week of relaxation, this is the place to go.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 July 2012

We did a lot of research before we settled on this hotel and we were not disappointed with our choice!
The flight is ok, a little cramped, but at least Thomson have now started providing a complentary light meal. No in flight entertainment though.
Boa Vista is barran, there is nothing there, so the focus of your holiday is the hotel. What things there are to see are best done through the Thomson excursions as majority of "attractions" are reached by dirt tracks, not sign posted, so it relies on local knowledge to get you there. We did the 4x4 highlights excursion, it's half a day and worth going on to see the island. We also went in a snorkelling trip through the hotel scuba centre, €15 for 2hrs and well worth the trip put to see the coral reef and fish.
The hotel itself is huge and very clean. Our room was a good size as we had a suite. Never really had trouble getting beds by the pool, beach could get busy sometimes. The beach runs a flag system but most days were green days with the odd amber day, so no issues with going in the sea. If you want to get in big waves, take a trip to Santa Monica beach, some of them were huge, but be warned, there's no lifeguard at that beach.
The food was pretty good. Only had one poor night. Get into the Buda restuarant, tends to book up quick, it's very nice Asian food. Plenty of drinks choice and the measures are very generous.
The only down point for us was the evening entertainment. Like most people have said they try really hard, it just wasn't to our taste.
Overall we had a great time, would recommend this hotel to anyone. The weather was gorgeous all week and sometimes unbarably hot. Just don't go expecting there to be loads to see and do as there is nothing there. It's a holiday to sit around, relax, and do nothing in lovely surroundings.
We'd give it 4.5 out of 5!

Just got back from a very nice holiday at the Rui Karomboa, we usually head for the carribean this time of year but decided to give cape verde a go as we were becoming a bit fed up with 10 hour flights, to start with some negative stuff, the flight with thompsons was to be honest very cramped and uncomfortable,we arent partically tall people so it must have been pretty horrible for the larger passenger on the plane, they ran out of various food and drink on the plane as well ..so in all we were glad to get off the plane...we arrived at the airport on boa vista and it was very clean and we got through airport control very quickly...now im sure when we booked our holiday they said ( Thompsons ) the coach ride from the airport was 30 minutes,it actually is 3 minutes away..you could have walked it in 5 minutes,at first we thought the hotel being so near to the airport might be a bit of a problem but it wasnt at all so dont panic when you see how close you are to the airport. When we arrived at the rui karamboa we were quickly checked into our room . the room is a little on the small side but fine ,it was clean and considering what we payed for the holiday we couldnt complain really...after a shower we explored the hotel..i have to say what a great looking hotel it is,its like a castle that has been dropped from the sky into a desert. . i read some of the remarks made by other visitors to the karomboa about there being no waiter service in the buffet restaurant ..all very true apart from the theme restaurants ..there is also no waiter service when you go to the bars in the hotel,we found this great to be honest,in the restaurant we liked being able to choose what food we wanted and in the bars when we went to get our drinks at the bar the staff were quick with the drinks and very friendly. What else can i tell you?..the beach is nice ,be warned it does get a little windy down there also it can get a little chilly at night.....if you are going there for your holiday all i can say is we had a great time and we will be going back there in the near future ...have a great holiday.

All i can say about this place is WOW.There is nothing to do except relax and join in the daily activities if you want to.I would reccomend taking the day trip around the the island to see the different landscapes and the beautiful beach of Santa Monica. The staff in the hotel are so polite, and they can not do enough for you. They are always working and never stand still. The entertainment is very good, even though they are not proffesionals. The restaurants are first class, and there is something for everyone. An encouraging thing is to see the head chefs checking all the food ,both at lunchtimes and in the evenings at all the restaurants. There is no tea or coffee facilities in the room,or room service as it is a club hotel, however there is 24 hr drinks at the reception.Again this is excellent. The hotel looks massive, but everything is within a 5 minute walk. The hotel itself is absolutely spotless and the gardeners ars always working hard,If you are a couple just relaxing i would say go to the far side of the pools where nothing is going on.I would definately recommend this to any body, however just remember this is RIU only european hotel so expect different nationalities from europe.

Room Tip: ask for the quiet rooms looking towards the port and sal rai

We've just returned back from Riu Karamboa last night - stayed there for 1 week holiday. Here is my brief advice for anybody who is thinking of booking this hotel.

GO - if you are willing to spend your holiday with the entire airplane. If you don't mind loud music for a few hours (same every day), crowded swimming pool and hundreds of pool loungers packed next to each other with 90% being taken before you get breakfast at 7.30. If you like beautiful beach and sunbathing but don't mind the clouds and breeze. If you like beach volleyball and crowd activities like aqua aerobics in the pool or dance lessons by the pool bar. If you want to eat and drink (quite well) all day non stop. If you want to spend the whole time in one place feeling like trapped in an artificial oasis.

DO NOT GO - if you want something special, quiet and romantic.

Room Tip: Something further from the main building if you prefer to avoid all that entertainment noise.

Having stayed in a Riu Place hotel in Mexico a few years ago, our expectations were reasonably high as the Riu Palace was worthy of it's 5 star rating. This hotel is far far from a 5 star, but it's still an ok place to go.

The hotel suffered from serious rising damp (see photo) and obviously our room smelled of damp as well. Everything about the hotel was ok but nothing more than that. The food was ok - the kind of thing you'd get served up in an average cafe and it was very repetitive. In fairness there was quite a good selection of salads at lunch and dinner, but pretty much everything else was the same every day and I did find myself very bored of the food by day 3. Breakfast was probably the best meal.

The beach was very nice and I did not see any evidence of stray dogs on this beach that other people had commented about. There was a couple of donkeys though and the guard shooed them away pretty quickly!

The bathroom area does not have a door on it, although the toilet does. So, if you step out of the shower, you enter the main room - not ideal if you are travelling with someone other than your partner.

If you take a trip into Sal Rei, it's quite humbling as the people are extremely poor - they live in shacks with cardboard roofs held down by stones. So in contrast the hotel is a pretty good place.

Make sure you bring something to amuse yourself as the shows are dreadful and there is nothing else to do other than to drink the free alcohol.

The weather was generally good, apart from the first 3 days which were largely cloudy, but warm.

The light failed outside of our room and the toilet stopped flushing which reported 3 times and we ended up having to plead with the Thomson rep to ask them to fix it.

We tried out the disco one night which was ok until my partner slipped on the wet floor and broke his ankle!

Overall, we had a pretty relaxing holiday and none of our party of 6 became ill, so even though the food was nothing special, it was obviously prepared and cooked in hygienic conditions.
