This is the only accredited zoo run by a private high school and is not easy to find! There are no signs on the road suggesting that a real Zoo is hidden just around the corner so you have to know its there. Route 44 runs between Millbrook and Amenia, NY and about in the middle there is a small sign directing you to the Millbrook School. Take that road and then park in the lot to the right just before getting to the school. Walk further down the road past a few school buildings and see the Zoo entrance on the right. There are many rustic cages and natural areas for the animals to run as well as a small pond for birds and the happy otters. No lions and tigers here but the range of animals is surprising and leads to interesting encounters. Its not a big Zoo but well worth a visit. Students at the school have an invaluable opportunity to help with all aspects of zoo management so your visit is not only interesting but you are performing a service as some of the animals are endangered species.
This place is great for small children!!
Not a huge place but you can definitely pack a lunch and be there for a couple of hours.
Very reasonable and it's great that the kids that go to school there take care of them.
They also do great little talks for Pre k kids and they bring out animals to show you of course you need to make an appointment for that and it's a small cost.
On the grounds of the beautiful Millbrook School is a fabulous little zoo. It is an accredited zoo, and is maintained by students at the school. It is open every day except Christmas, and is well worth the trip if you are in the area. Located not far off route 44 on Millbrook School Road, the little zoo has many interesting exhibits of indigenous and more exotic animals. The exhibits are both inside and outside, and you need to take your time and look at everything. There are Lemurs, and some marmosets and tamarinds near the first building you come too. Take a look inside and see some rare turtles, a Sugar Glider and a Slow Loris, as well as exotic parrots.
As you wander through the zoo you will observe, birds of prey, foxes, turkeys, porcupine, red wolf, Kea, red panda, emus, wallabies, kangaroos, Alpacas, Guanaco, Sika Deer, and the best part is that you are up close and personal with these animals. You can observe them without the throngs that you would have to deal with at a large zoo. The setting is very nice and the atmosphere is relaxed. It is a totally enjoyable few hours to spend, all on a small entrance fee. It is really worth the trip, especially if you need a little extra help keeping someone occupied.
