My husband and I visited Lake Placid in March of 2005. We had such a nice time. It was snowing lightly when we arrived and it looked like such a winter wonderland. We had dinner the first night next to a roaring fire place in the Fireside Steakhouse across from the outdoor ice rink. Very cozy.
We purchased the Winter Passport at the Olympic store. This gives you a pass to go ice skating, enter the olympic museum, visit the ski jump, take a gondola ride up Whiteface mtn and it gives you a discount on boblsedding. We did all this (minus the ride up the mtn). Great time. We also did a two hour snowmobile rental about 20 minutes outside of town. We'd highly recommend this also. Nice way to see the beautiful snow covered area. So peaceful. We're not skiers, but it looked like Whiteface Mtn was a popular skiing location.
We stayed at the Crowne Plaza Resort (was/is a Holiday Inn). Not bad, but it is at the top of a VERY steep hill. We'd read reviews on it, but figured we're in pretty good shape so it shouldn't be a problem. But it was actually quite a hike and we only did that once (took our car out the rest of the time).
All in all, LOVED Lake Placid and can't wait to go back!
