With Chutney Masala's move up to Main St. this space became available for it's sister restaurant - Sambal. Despite the name the menu focuses more on Thai food than Malaysian...perhaps not surprising given the chef's name - Lucky Thai.
First the starters. The Tom Kha (Coconut/Lemongrass Soup) and Green Papaya salad were both delicious but the Roti Paratha was a bit disappointing - the Roti was fine but the tiny cup of sauce was both insufficient and somewhat flavorless. As for the entrees, the Chef's fried rice was tasty but the Lamb Massaman Curry was spectacular with vibrant flavors and tender meat. Unfortunately, dessert was something of a disaster. The chocolate cake wasn't available so we ordered the Thai Rice pudding and Sticky Rice with Mango. Unfortunately, what came out of the kitchen were two rice puddings...and they weren't very good. They tasted like they had been prepped long ago and had been sitting in a refrigerator all day.
All that said...our drinks - a Singapore Sling and a Rum of the Mill - were delicious and the service was excellent. Perhaps best of all, when they updated the building for the new restaurant they added an outdoor deck with heaters on the 2nd floor. Getting to sit outside and enjoy the sunset while we enjoyed our dinner made for a spectacular experience.
Lastly...and this is more of a note for the restaurant...where is my Nasi Lemak? Malaysia's national dish - the first Malaysian food I ever tasted and still my favorite - should be on your menu. Sambal is to my knowledge the only Malaysian restaurant in Westchester...Represent!
