Ngala Lodge really lives up to its reputation as one of the best, if not the best, hotel in Gambia, It is a truly relaxing experience with stunning sea views, beautiful gardens and a relaxing ambience.

The suites are simply designed, but very spacious and well equipped. Beds were extremely comfortable. The free use of a mobile phone was a great idea and ensured service was always available from the friendly staff.

Food was excellent quality although top end pricing for Gambia.

The decking area down by the sea/beach was a wonderful place to relax in peace and quiet with only the sound of waves to keep you company.

The sculptures throughout the garden are quirky and will either make you laugh or dispair!

Only minor concern was that some areas of the hotel look a little tired and need some attention, however this did not in anyway affect our fabulous stay.

Room Tip: Some of the ground floor suites in the main building have poor views.

About two weeks before arriving in The Gambia, I emailed the restaurant and we had a confirmed booking for our Ruby Wedding Anniversary.
Therefore we were very disappointed when we arrived at the restaurant that at first they couldn’t see our booking and when it was found we had been placed in the middle of the restaurant instead of one of tables overlooking the sea. These tables appeared to have reserved by people staying at the hotel. As we had explained it was a special meal for our Ruby wedding anniversary, we had hoped we would have been given one of the best tables.

Because we wanted a table overlooking the sea, we were moved to the lower floor where we had a lovely view. However we missed out on the atmosphere of the upper restaurant and the music.

The food was lovely but spoilt by this.

Dear Kim, following on from my apology in our previous email correspondence, I do apologise again for this. The restaurant manager did allocate a prime table for 4 persons, for you in our elevated section of the restaurant with prime views over the garden to the Atlantic ocean. Our hotel was full and it is difficult for us not to prioritise our inhouse guests staying for 7, 10 or 14 days when they have requested the tables for 2 persons on the edge.
I am pleased that you enjoyed the food and the restaurant team managed to reset you in the lower floor.
Once again I am sorry that this put a dampener on your evening and I do hope you will give us another chance to make it up to you.

Your every need is thought of here. We had a wonderful time. The staff are friendly and helpful, the food wonderful, and the views of the Atlantic amazing. The gardens are so pretty and the pools very inviting. Not too far from the airport either, and there's also a nice - though hot - stroll to Cape Point were a nice lunch can be enjoyed at Calypso Beach Bar (sitting next to a pool of crocs). We will be going back to Ngala.

Room Tip: We had ground floor suite 5 (Dogo). I would ask for a first floor room with a sea view if I go again.

Had such a wonderful time here last year that we couldn't wait to return this year. It was just as lovely as we had remembered it. Beautiful gardens, great food and attentive, friendly staff. Only left the hotel grounds once in a week to have a lovely lunch at Calypso bar. Special thanks again to Sophia who kept our room spotlessly clean. Solomon, our waiter was always friendly and efficient.
We hope to return again next year.

Room Tip: We stayed in Macondo suite 22 both years.

We're just returned from our first visit to the Gambia and what a lovely place and people we found.
We stayed at Ngala Lodge in Suite 3 which was huge with a similarly large shaded balcony overlooking the small swimming pool and with views down to the gardens and sea beyond.
The room is simply furnished with some eclectic art pieces, especially the lampshades. The bed was massive, at least a superking size and incredibly comfortable.
The hotel has 2 small swimming pools, one which is an infinity pool running along the edge of the clifftop with views to the sea and the other in a small suntrap courtyard. On arrival we had a group welcome chat from Jonathan the General Manager and he gave us a special mention for our wedding anniversary and told us a little about the hotel. You don't tip the staff individually, you get 3 envelopes on check out, one for your room maid, one for the waiting staff, chefs, bar etc and the other for the garden, maintenance & security. These are then shared out evenly among all staff which I thought was a really nice touch. I also liked the mobile phone in your room from which you could call room service, the restaurant or if you were lying by either pool or in the gardens anywhere you could order a drink etc and it was brought to your sunbed. Great idea!
The hotel restaurant was very nice with lovely views over the gardens and out to sea. A really varied menu and the food was excellent. Nice friendly staff too. Mentions to Solomon, Malick, Lamin, Yassin & Mo behind the bar.
We did follow our tour operator's advice (The excellent Gambia Experience. We soon discovered that they know everything there is to know about Gambia) and ate our in the local restaurants. We went to the Clay Oven which was excellent Indian food, Cafe O'Delice where we had a superb Lebanese meze and lunch at Calyso bar, which is great if you like birdwatching as they have their own wetland pool with loads of birds and a crocodile too. There were lots more that we didn't get to try.
On our wedding anniversary we came down to breakfast to find a lovely message written on the blackboard and flowers and a note on our table. Was a really sweet gesture. That day we'd decided to go out for a day tour with Habib the hotel's recommended taxi and tour guide. He was a great guy and guide. He took us to the monkey park where it was fabulous to see so many monkeys in the wild. Habib was the monkey whisperer and they were all flocking to him. We fed them nuts and they were so gentle taking them out of your hands. We also saw the baboons at Makasutu and then had a walk round a local market for the locals which was hectic and colourful. We had lunch at paradise beach bar and then ended our day with the amazing fishing village of Tanji seeing how they smoke and dry fish. The process hasnt changed for centuries and neither had the way they empty the fishing boats by carrying large bowls of fish from boat to shore where it's bartered for. Masses of crowds and colour and glad that we had Habib with us as it's not a place you really want to venture unguided. Also if you don't like the smell of fish then it's probably not for you, lol, but we found it fascinating.
A short week but we packed a lot in and would definitely recommend Ngala Lodge and return there next time.
Thank you Ngala & Gambia Experience for a great intro to this lovely country.
