“Lovely spot on the beautiful island of La Digue”
Reviewed 16 March 2012

We stayed here for our first 4 days in the Seychelles.

We booked a garden room, but were pleasantly surprised when we were upgraded to a hillside villa de Charme. This was a very well received gesture, as these rooms were amazing. The show / bathroom are outside, have a very large bedroom, and a large outdoor balcony looking down the lush green hillside towards the sea in the distance. The rooms are walkable from the reception / pool area, but they also have golf carts to take you back and forth with minimal wait. The buggy can also pick you up from the ferry jetty which is about 1km away.

The reception and rooms are on one side of the small road with the pool, bar and restaurants on the other side. Note that the road is a single track brick blocked road, frequented by pretty much bicycles and oxes only.

Breakfast is served on the sand floored buffet restaurant. This was the only minor issue I had with the hotel, as the food was often warm (not hot) and often the trays were empty. Yes, I have to admit this is the only thing I could pick fault with the hotel!

Lunch is available at the a la carte restaurant on the decking near the pool, and dinner is served in either restaurant. Both had a good selection, were made with quality ingredients, and the accompanying drinks selection was of a high standard.

The Pool area is very Zen like and was fabulous to sit around, however, the hotel provides free bikes for hire, so it is very much worth taking a towel, a bottle of water and cycling around the island. Anse D'Seargents is about 10 mins slow cycle away. In the other direction there are plenty of secluded beaches to spend the day at.

Free wifi was available near to reception and in the pool area.

Overall, fabulous room, excellent service, and a place to wind down and relax. Definetely THE place to stay in La Digue. Would love to return.

Room Tip: Villa de charme up the hillside to be recommended

Staying on La Digue at Domaine de l'Orangeraie was the highlight of our honeymoon in the Seychelles! The island is unreal and the hotel is absolutely spectacular! The staff was very friendly and happy to help with your every whim. Bikes are available throughout the day to all hotel guests and breakfasts made to order are delivered to your villa each morning to enjoy on the patio. The tropical smoothies each day were absolutely heaven! And do not miss the spa built up into the rocks - our couples massage had one of the best views on the island.

Our only tough decision each day was deciding if we should go explore the island's beaches or if we should lay be the gorgeous pool in one of the most perfect settings in the world. Either way, you can't go wrong! It is far and away the best hotel on the island and a good location near the small town and ferry port. Would highly recommend getting up in the morning and exploring the beaches early before the ferries and you won't see a soul in sight. We took off for Source d'Argent at about 9am and during our whole 2 hour walk along Source d'Argent we only saw 4 other people - and that was during high season! So we would absolutely recommend staying in La Digue and the only place to stay on the island is l'Orangeraie!

Dear Julie,

Thank you for your message. We were very pleased to learn how much you enjoyed your stay with us and we would like to thank you for letting us and to share with other readers know how impressed you were with the service you received.

Please also note that since your visit over July 2011, the breakfast service in the villa is now replaced by a service at the "Santosha" Restaurant, our buffet outlet, with even more variety of food to choose from, in the morning time.

Thanks for your review and for your support. We look forward to welcome you again

Best wishes

The hotel is very nice, located close to the Ferry station, amazing rooms in the lush decorated with an amazing taste. It has a restaurant (2 in fact) and a very nice infinity pool just crossing the street, facing the sea, also nicely decorated and with reasonable prices. Sunsets are the pool are amazing, also some days they play live music making the ambient unbeatable. The "beach" where the hotel has some balinese beds on, is not a proper beach as the waters are very shallow and one of those days we were there, the water seem not to be moving much so it was a bit stinky, I wouldn't recommend satying on that beach with so many amazing beaches in La Digue island. The hotel was very nice, though I must say the staff was proffessionla but not particularly nice , we missed a bit of more cheerful and kind people. Buggies that take you to the rooms drive really fast so make sure you you are holding somewhere firmly or you might fall! I think though is probbaly the best hotel in La Digue and I'd come back for sure.

Room: We had a Garden Villa. We loved the dark wood design of the villa, similar to what we've stayed in in places in South East Asia. It's very large, being a villa rather than hotel room. Downstairs there is a kitchen, large lounge, W/C, large balcony, outdoor shower. Upstairs there is the bedroom, a walk in dressing room and the main bathroom. We really loved the villa on originally arriving. However we were there 4 nights and during this time found a few things we didn't like so much... first of all the dark wood furnishings looked stunning but my gosh not great for relaxing at all - the hard wood sofas and chairs in the lounge were just that, hard, and completely and utterly uncomfortable to actually sit or try to lounge on! Obviously designed for look not comfort which is a bit of a mistake in a holiday villa! The villa is decorated nicely but not built to last. The upstairs shower is finished with pebbles all over the walls but these were already chipping off and falling out all over the place, even though the resort is still very new. They need to sort this out. The kitchen.... well nice idea but we thought we'd cook a homemade meal one night to use it and then found out you really can't buy much on the island for such a thing, so never ended up using it and always ate out.

Resort facilities: Stunning pool area, ultra chick, right on the water, beautiful place to hang out! The spa was one of the most stunning I've ever visited for a massage. It was up the hillside so if you are staying in a Garden villa you can take a buggy from the reception up the hill to the spa. The individual spa rooms are walled on three sides, the space facing the ocean is completely open, no walls at all and a spectacular view over the island out to the beach. Free bikes are available for hire and a great way to explore the island. Our biggest complaint with the bikes was the staff member who ran the bikes area and was very unfriendly. One time we were out biking for the day and we came back to the hotel just to pick up towels, so literally a 1 min walk to our villa and back. A hotel security guy said we couldn't take the bike to our villa, a few metres away so had to park across the road by the beach. We did so only to return 1 min later and they weren't there. We went to the bike area and the bike staff member actually YELLED at us for leaving our bikes where the security guard was. We explained about the security guard telling us to leave them there and he just went on and on about no one at the resort knew about bikes or anything else, only he did, etc. Was very very unprofessional and unfriendly. Hotel restaurant looked very nice but was extremely expensive - and we live in London! We never ended up eating there, there were quite a few options in town only a few minutes walk away or cycle away. Another option for meals was the buffet at the La Digue Island lodge, this is a thatched restaurant right on the beach with sandy floors and we really liked the laid back island style, at a fraction of the L'Oraneraie restaurant prices - that hotel even sent a shuttle to pick us up and later drop us off to L'Orangeraie for a small fee. There was a small lounge with free internet and a shower if you have checked out of your room and are awaiting a later ferry.

Staffing: Need a lot more training, not anywhere near as friendly as service received on Praslin. They were not particularly efficient, friendly or professional. Wouldn't particularly rate the staff at this resort at all.

Location: Right on the waterfront, so lovely in that regard. 5 mins walk or 2mins cycle to the pier and start of town. 10mins cycle ride to another beach in the opposite direction.

Overall, this resort has many things going for it, the pool area and spa in particular are both STUNNING! but it doesn't seem as if it is going to stand the test of time very well in terms of room furnishings. The staff are a definite let down. Generally though we did find the people on La Digue not as friendly as those on Praslin. Would we go back? Mmmm we'd probably try somewhere else.

The staff at the reception and the staff at the reception area were quite hautain, we did not feel very welcome at all. Staff at the restaurant was very kind.
Imagine if you did not want to attend the evening buffet, you could eat at the a la carte restaurant, but you had to pay the bill for100% so no discount. Our experience at a hotel in Mahe was a discount of 25 Euro if we wanted to eat in the restaurant instead of the buffet.
We were staying at a villa de charme, most charming indeed, lovely bathroom, but the walking in closet was hilarious, if you wanted to find your clothes your had to crawl over your bags to find the light at the back at floor level

Dear Limburg 353,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We appreciate the opportunity offered to us to welcome you in our hotel.

Your various comments have been seriously taken into consideration. We regret that you left our property with mixed feelings but hope that you could enjoy the rest of our different hotel services, as well as the authenticity of La Digue island and its most beautiful awarded beaches.

For your entertainment, an infinity swimming pool as well as two bars (the Pool Bar and the Alambic Bar) welcome you on the seafront. In addition to these facilities, the Combava “a la carte” restaurant as well as the Santosha restaurant, a buffet & live cooking outlet, are both the ideal places to unwind in a tropical and chic atmosphere overlooking the Indian Ocean.

The Santosha restaurants serves various local specialties in eclectic mix live cooking style and buffet with the “catch of the day”. Dinners are thematic and are changing on a daily basis : Creole, Fishermen, Asian, International, Arabic, Italian, Indian… When booking half-board basis at Le Domaine, you get access to the Santosha restaurant and your private table is always booked there.

The Combava restaurant (the “a la carte” – gourmet outlet) is also open every day except on Wednesday for dinner. The Combava is an exquisitely designed roof terrace lounge serving à la carte food only, where advanced reservations are recommended. As the half board basis allows you to access only our Santosha restaurant, we can then recommend that you book your stay on bed and breakfast (B&B) basis only, so you are more flexible to choose your dining option, between “a la carte” or “thematic buffet and live cooking”, at applicable menu rates in both restaurants.

Thank you once again for your valuable feedback. We look forward to another opportunity to welcome you at Le Domaine de L’Orangeraie soon,

Kind regards,
Philippe CORNAILLE
