“One of the best state parks I have been too!”

Glimmerglass State Park

I am a review reader and not normally a contributor...my bad. But I was so impressed with this State Park I made my wife remind to write a review about it somewhere. I hope you find this of use.

My family and I enjoy tenting and try to get to a couple of State Parks each year. We've had great luck with NY State Parks in general but Glimmerglass was tops. Bathrooms were clean, garbage and recycle bins were emptied often, site grounds were well maintained, and the staff was highly accommodating (better than many hotels I have stayed at as well). As an example, I bought 2 bundles of wood there and had trouble with it due to it not being seasoned. I got it to burn but just made a side comment to one of the staff while I was chatting with him about the grounds. He got on his radio and said he would address it. When I got back to my site I found 3 bundles waiting for me by my fire pit!!

There is a ton to do in the hidden treasure. Lake beach is clean, with sand, 2 life guards, a store, big bathrooms with changing rooms, outside showers, picnic tables, grills, and 2 playgrounds. Nearby are many walking trails including one that crosses the oldest covered bridge in the United States! Didn't know that before going. There is the old Hyde Mansion up on the hill that you can take a tour of. We didn't have time but a reason for us to go back. I think it was $10.

Campsites are in 2 sections. One is the more rustic area with a port-a-john. Not too long of a walk to the beach if you need to use a real toilet. The other camping area has 2 playgrounds, horseshoes, a big sink to clean dishes, a handicap bathroom, and a regular mens and ladies restrooms with 2 stalls and 2 showers in each.

Star gazing at night is amazing and the critters are out. We saw deer all times a day, raccoons are out at night (keep garbage and food in the car), and I heard coyotes off in the distance a couple of nights. All campsites are wooded including those right by the bathroom. Although we didn't have the gear, we saw lots of boating, kayaking, and canoeing. We went fishing although we didn't catch anything (but we are novices at it).

Things to do nearby include Glimmerglass Opera (no idea what they have there but noticed it on the drive), Cooperstown of course (10 min), Herkimer Diamond Mines (40 min), and Howe Caverns (40 min).

As you can tell we had an awesome time and already plan on going back next year. Hope this helped your searching. I'd let you know what site number we stayed on but I want it available for next year! Haha.

Lake Otsego is a beautiful lake but you will not find many places to actually enjoy it unless you own or rent a boat.

Glimmerglass State Park is one of the few and is a must see when you visit Cooperstown. There is an incredible beach where you can go swimming (did not get a chance to do), and several nice trails (one includes the oldest covered bridge in US).

Admission to the park is worth the price especially if you are there to swim for the day and is free if you are camping at the park.

This is a beautiful state park. I don't think it had any electric at the sites for RVers. Not crowded. Easy to get to Cooperstown. This years Induction, it will be my 3rd time staying at this campground.
