This was our final destination on our vacation across Namibia, Zambia and Botswana and boy did we save the best to last at this Wilderness Safaris Camp situated about 25km north of Mombo, in the neighbouring private reserve of 60,000 hectares within the Okavango Delta.

We stayed in the South Camp which has only 6 lodges (8 on the adjoining North Camp) and each lodge was privately fenced off and of a luxurious size with private decking, plunge pool, sun loungers and external seating area overlooking the floodplain.

The bed is huge (big enough to sleep 4!) with a work area, shower overlooking the plain (while there is an external shower too), plenty of electricity points, a same day laundry service and a well-stocked mini-bar. It is worth noting there is no WiFi or phone signal within the camp.

The main area has a lovely decking area with a fire pit all overlooking the plains. Meals can be taken outside or if windy/ colder inside with shutters closed. There is also a separate bar and seating area.

The food here is extremely delicious. All meals are of a good size and unlike some other camps the brunch doesn’t make you feel you won’t be able to eat ever again! All important given how regular you get offered food on safari!

Animals do roam free through the camp so expect a chorus of hippos serenading you to sleep through the night or elephants walking right by and in touching distance. Amazing!

The drives here offer a wide range of different landscapes and you can expect to see lions and leopards (we saw more leopards here than we have anywhere else across Africa or India), all other main mammals, birds etc. Our guide Nas was brilliant, especially for someone so young (as guides go!).

The mokoro rides are super-relaxing whilst the motorboat safari offers a completely different perspective of the delta.

However, as much as this camp is well decorated, adorned and situated what makes this stand out is the people. Everyone is so happy, positive, welcoming, chatty, polite and basically very friendly. They really make you feel special and for us this has easily been the best of the many camps we have stayed at. Thank you all and we will definitely return at some point.

If I could I would give this camp a rating well above the 5 maximum.

Dear KevL69,

Thank you for your wonderful review, we are delighted to see how much you enjoyed your stay with us and that our fabulous staff helped make your journey that much more memorable. Luxurious Vumbura Plains lies in an area that is a mix of water and dry land. The wildlife is diverse, so that both land and water activities on vehicles, mekoro and boats deliver an all-round African safari experience.

Thank you again

The rooms at this camp are hands-down the most spectacular of all that I have stayed in on safari in Africa. The location and views are stunning and the shower in the rooms will leave you speechless. And I loved the privacy of its own outdoor living room with plunge pool. Although it was unseasonably cold while we staying there, so could not use the pool, that was not a problem since the room was so dreamy. The staff were the friendliest of all the camps I stayed at, and the food delicious. Our guide - "Nas" - was a lot of fun and extremely knowledgeable. This is definitely a camp I will come back to!

We stayed 3 nights in June 2018. We were fortunate to pick a relatively quiet time when there was only one other family at Vumbura South. As a result we got brilliant attention and the benefit of a private guide throughout our 3 days. As with other safaris we find that the quality of the guide really determines the success or otherwise of our trip. ST is an experienced guide and also someone with a great sense of humor and a sensitivity to what the guests might like. He was the highlight of our stay. Having said that the rest of the staff were also great. While some reviews highlight what seems to be some “stage managed” enthusiasm in the welcomes etc we found the staff to be genuine and lovely people to sit down around the fire or at any time and have a chat with. They are happy to share details about themselves and life in Botswana if you are interested. The accommodation is excellent. It is not brand new but it is in great condition and deliberately a little rustic. It fits its environment and we enjoyed it. The meals are very good quality and you are guaranteed to put on weight unless you can be super disciplined - but that would defeat the purpose of being there. There is no internet nor phone service so be prepared to relax and take a break from the world - it is worth it. The game drives were excellent and we saw plenty of game and a huge variety. It does not have the density of game of Sabi Sands but it is an entirely different environment and that is its beauty. It just means you travel a little further between sightings but then the experience is awesome - herds of elephants in the water or crossing water, prides of lions in the grasslands or walking through water - there is room much to describe. Seeing the variety of animals in the different environments is truly amazing. Having a guide who can explain the environment and the flaura and fauna makes for a great experience. Highly recommended experience.

Room tip: The ratings above would not work for me but all are a 5.

Dear FC021956,

ST has been working at Vumbura Plains for the past ten years where the magnificent views of the permanent flood plains and lagoons in and around camp attract a variety of birds species which is always a bonus for not only our guests but guides alike. “The landscape and scenery in Vumbura Plains is wonderful. The open plains, the diversity of game viewing is always exciting”.

We are delighted to see how much you enjoyed your time spent with him and will be sure to pass along your kind words.

Bush regards

This was the last of 3 lodges. It was the most rustic and different. The room was so different and exotic. Step down sitting area with mini refrigerator stocked with wine, beer, and Amarula . Bed to one side of the. large room and a large square shower on other side of the room. Outdoor shower and plunge pool on the deck. You are near water and hear hippos at night. You walk along raised boardwalk to go from room to room. At night and early in morning you must call someone to escort you to the main area to eat. Hippos and elephants are known to walk by camp. The food and service was wonderful. Staff lined up to greet us and introduced themselves to us. We had 2 birthdays. We were a group of 6 people and after the morning drive we stopped in the bush and had a spectacular lunch buffet. Table set and many different platters of meats and salads and liquor. It was an amazing sight and a big surprise. The day we were leaving for Cape Town, was my husbands birthday. On the way to the airstrip we stopped on the side of the road to see a smiling staff member from camp. A table with a chocolate cake and mimosas! What a surprise and so special to plan and do that for us.
Zee was our guide and a friendly, funny, knowledgeable guide and driver. He drove very well since their are no paved roads . Driving on sand or in shallow water was challenging. Saw many animals and took a mekoros on the Okavango delta and saw a beautiful sunset while on the water. One afternoon there was a group of local women weaving baskets and we were able to buy the local crafts.
Was a wonderful place to end our safari drives.

Dear LeeMahwah,

Thank you for your wonderful review, we are glad to see how much you all enjoyed your stay with us and hope it will always be a memorable birthday for your husband. Our local craftsmen and wonderful weavers are all from the local Okavango Community Trust: Vumbura Plains is situated in a Wildlife Management Area. Five villages have combined to form a Trust which has partnered with Wilderness Safaris. It manages the affairs of the community and ensures that the rewards of ecotourism are fairly distributed.

Thank you again

This was the second camp we visited on our first trip to Africa. This camp was larger than our previous one and I still can’t get over the logistics involved to provide this level of service out in the bush. It’s situated right on the delta so we were serenaded by hippos during the day and little frogs singing at night. The game drives were great and our guide Tebla did an amazing job. At this camp we not only traveled by truck, but also motor boat and canoe. The wildlife is incredible. Unlike most Safari goers we rarely went on the morning game drives (getting up at 5:30 am is not vacation for us,) however we loved the afternoon outings with the stop for the sundowner cocktail, a tradition I would
love to continue back home. It was my birthday one night and they made me feel very special. The entire staff came out and sang me the Setswana (one of the official languages of Botswana) version of Happy Birthday as well as our traditional happy birthday song. They surprised be with champagne which when opened sprayed all over me and I could not have been happier.

Dear Tom,

Thank you for your wonderful review and for sharing your special day with us - we are glad to see the team in camp were able to make it a memorable one for you. The morning drives can be a little early for some however is the only reasonable time to go out other than late afternoons as it is too hot during the rest of the day and even the animals tend to find cool places to hide.

Kind regards
