“A wonderful experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 March 2012

We spent 4 nights at Ulusaba safari lodge on our recent honeymoon and it couldn't have been more perfect. The lodge is right on the river bed, nestled into the trees so that it tastefully blends into the surrounds. The rooms are set out beautifully and comfortably. The food was delicious and we subsequently ate far too much! The service was also impeccable. But the highlight above anything else were the safari's. It was absolutely exhausting - the 5am starts were a killer but it was more than worthwhile. We got up close and personal with so many amazing animals thanks to our guide and his expert tracker, they make it their priority to ensure you have the ultimate experience by any means possible. Our guides knowledge of the local flora and fauna was very impressive and I don't think there was a question that we had that he couldn't answer. We would highly recommend Ulusaba Safari lodge to anyone looking into heading to africa for a safari.

Room Tip: The rooms don't matter so much as you spend barely any time in them. We didn't see any other...

My wife and I stayed here last year in September for my birthday. We split the holiday between the Safari lodge and the Rock lodge, 3 days in each. I assume that most people go to see the animals, if so I would say to give the Rock lodge a miss. Don't get me wrong, it's five star plus accommodation, the views are amazing, the food is as good as it gets, but you're on safari, you want to see animals and the Rock lodge is way up ontop of a hill. The Safari lodges on the other hand surround a watering hole. Laying on my bed having a mid-afternoon nap and the wife wakes me up to point out that a giraffe is staring in at us, not way off in the distance but literally leaning over our balcony staring into the room. That's the beauty of the safari lodges, the animals actually wander around the camp.

So do you see animals? The answer is yes, twice a day, everyday day. I can't think of one trip out that we didn't see a leopard. Elephants, rhino, impala, giraffes, baboons, wildebeest, zebra, scorpions, chameleons, eagles of all shapes and sizes and one evening we even saw a pack of Endangered African Hunting dogs with a kill. We saw up close and personal a leopard up a tree eating an Impala whilst Hyena waited at the bottom for any falling scraps.

The Safari lodges themselves are fairly small but very plush. At the end of the day we were up at 5am every morning (I'm not a morning person but I managed it, in fact I didn't even know there was a 5am, I thought it was myth) you then grab a quick coffee and you're off. Back about 10.30 for breakfast, then spa or sleep until lunch then off out again at 4pm for 3 hours then back for quick shower and then dinner, so in reality you are hardly in the room at all, so why did the wife pay for a more expensive lodge in the camp? I'm still trying to figure that one out.

So many people on this site use words like "amazing" and "unforgettable" but that is exactly what this place was. You hope to see various animals but what you don't expect is to see leopards walk past your open top jeep within a foot of the jeep or elephants wander over to check you out, shouldn't it be the other way around?

All of the staff were simply fantastic, but it's your guide and his tracker who make the trip. Our guide was a guy called Greg and his tracker was Daniel. You're paying a fortune for this trip so you want the best so ask for these guys. How do I know they were the best, because of an evening when you discuss what you saw that day and compare photos with other guests we always saw so much more and so much closer than the other guests.

So to sum up, this is an expensive trip so my suggestion is to forget the kids inheritance and splash out on this instead, if your kids love you they will love you for yourselves not what you might leave them in your will, if your kids aren't that nice then upgrade and fly Virgin Upper Class!

Room Tip: For sleep quality I've only given 3 stars because that's the honest answer, you simply don...

We stayed at Ulusaba for 4 nights in mid November 2011. We booked the three night photographic safari and it was the best safari we have ever had. I have been to Zimbabwe twice, Kenya twice and South Africa before on safai but the game drives from Ulusaba were amazing and our driver and spotter were the best.
The photographic safari states that there will be a maximum of 4 people in the jeep, but we were the only onbes booked on the course and therefore had the whole jeep to ourselves which was fantastic - private game drives are definately worthwhile. We were given lots of tips for our photographs and our guide always made sure we had the best spot to take that amazing photograph. At Ulusaba they are allowed to go off road as it is a private game reserve and this helps immensely when you are following and traching the game. We saw leopard on 4 seperate occassions - also saw elephant, lion, white rhino, zebra, loads of antelope and bird life, only big animal we didn't see was cheetah. They now have black rhino on the reserve but this beast was still "settling" in while we were there so it was off limits.
The Safari Lodge was amazing - we stayed in the very basic room, but it was more than adequate with plenty of room and storage, a nice balcony for lounging and animal spotting, a bathroom with shower and bath and easy walking to the bar and restaurant. Everything is included in the price, all meals and drinks and the bar stocks all main spirits not cheap local alternatives. Food was very good and there was enough choice to satisfy all fussy eaters.
The staff were wonderful, so friendly and helpful, going out of their way to make sure you feel comfortable and at home. It was worth every penny.
This place is expensive, but if you only intend on having one safari in your lifetime, this is an ideal location. We hope to be able to return again sometime, but as we travel to lots of different places when we holiday, this may not happen, but we will recommend it to everyone we talk to.

Room Tip: Walking over the bridges can be a bit of a probloem so bare this in mind if you are not good at bala...

We stayed there in late July and here we are 5 months later and all we can do is think and talk about how great our experience was. The food, the local people, the staff, the game drives (we saw everything and then some), the attention to detail, our rooms.... It was amazing. My wife and I are hard to please and have high standards, we couldn't say anything negative if we tried, only good things. Ulusaba was the best!
