Casa Gallina is located in an undeveloped area of Taos, New Mexico. The views are fabulous. You are surrounded by mountains! From the Bantam Roost casita upper deck, you can watch sunset, sunrise, and have a fabulous view of the moon and stars at night! Very little light scatter!

And Richard Spera, our host, raises these absolutely unbelievable chickens! According to Richard "We feed the girls and the girls feed us!" We had fresh eggs every morning. AND we got to feed the girls! And the boys.

Richard placed wine, locally-made goat cheese, nuts, chocolate, and crackers on the casita table for us to find upon arrival! And brought pastries every day. Organic coffee and tea were provided as well.

Recommednations for locally -owned farm-to-table restaurants were given to us, and the food and wine were so very wonderful!

Room Tip: If you are looking for a one-bedroom, the Bantam Roost is for you. The sleeping area is upstairs, an...

Staying at Casa Gallina is less like a B&B and more like a vacation rental, but with a host who quickly seems like an old friend. Each of the 4 casitas or cottages is decorated differently and seems to have a very different character. We stayed in the Bantam Roost, a charming old-style adobe house on 2 levels, with a woodburning kiva fireplace, kitchen, and LR downstairs and a bedroom, bath, and deck upstairs. We had spectacular views and lots of sunshine throughout the house.

The kitchen was fully equipped for cooking, and the host provides fresh eggs daily from his bevy of beautiful chickens. It is true that you are on your own for breakfast but coffee is also provided (a lovely fair trade espresso roast) and it was nice to be able to sit in my jammies and eat eggs and toast for breakfast. As others have mentioned, we arrived to find a table set with a bottle of wine and a lovely assortment of nibbles including locally made goat cheese. Throughout our stay, we were greeted with cookies, cupcakes, and a heavenly pot of homemade posole. There were cozy flannel sheets for our winter stay, when overnight temps dropped to the single digits.

My husband wanted to adopt the host and bring him home with us, while I just plain didn't want to go home.

We had a lovely stay at Casa Galina the first week of December. The room is so beautifully decorated that you feel as if you truly are living in someone's well cared for home. Richard is the perfect host; he sat with us and shared some suggestions for local hiking areas, restaurants, and shopping. His daily gift of baked goods was something to look forward to. The fireplace is wonderful and the computer he provides allowed us to listen to some new music and access the internet easily. Surprisingly, the hen house was a source of enjoyment as we fed "the girls" and then enjoyed fresh eggs each morning. A lovely place to stay. You won't be disappointed!

I had the great good fortune to spend a few days over Thanksgiving at Casa Gallina. Our casita was a total delight! Full of beautiful, unique artworks throughout, and appointed with everything that one could need. The kitchen and eating nook worked beautifully, and how we enjoyed starting our day cooking a breakfast with the fresh eggs that appeared magically each afternoon. At night, we'd enjoy the warmth and romance of the fireplace—always plenty of firewood and kindling. The casita was even equipped with computer and sound system, and we listened both to the tunes provided and our own tunes by plugging the sound system into our own laptop. Rarely does one find such thoughtfulness and attention to detail. Richard is the consummate host, and Casa Gallina is, quite simply, a gem.

You won't find a place more charming or a more gracious host than Richard Spera of Casa Gallina. We've stayed in the Bantam's Roost twice in the last few months and it is stellar. It is an individual guest house on the grounds with three other guest houses and is just what you would hope to find in Taos: a great adobe, very comfortable with artwork and beautiful decor, lovely gardens and the "Girls" (Richard's chickens) who supply fresh eggs for your breakfast pleasure each morning. The property is beautifully maintained and simply wonderful. If you need to get away and rest and relax, this is Nirvana, New Mexico style.
