I waited a couple of weeks to review Kapama. We had been to Moremi Crossing, Chobe Marina Lodge and Victoria Falls before coming here and we're already gobsmacked by where we stayed and what we had seen. Kapama Southern Camp is on a different level. Everything was fantastic. The rooms were wonderful, the service was ridiculous, the meals were fantastic, the staff always said hello, the Nyala, lechwe and impalas are a nice touch as well, not to mention the animals at the water hole. Oh and by the way, they do 2 safaris a day. Kapama is the ultimate safari experience!
Albert our guide was great. He went out his way to make our safaris memorable. From coffee with Amarula and rusks at the mid point of the morning drive to tying to find that elusive Leopard or tracking and finding 3 rhino and many lions, Kapama delivers. Can,t wait to go back. I miss it everyday.

Kapama Southern Camp is a true Oasis in a private game reserve. Every public space is visually stunning. The bath rooms in the standard rooms are very large, modern and comfortable. However, the standard rooms tend to be dark and small...I wish we could have stayed in a luxury suite, they are DIVINE! Ask for room 8 or 9 and get your own plunge pool!
The food was great, the restaurant was lovely. The BOMBA was really cool.

Our Ranger Jimmy and Tracker, Kenny were wonderful. We loved every minute of the game drives and could have stayed another few weeks. A great place..great stay...highly recommend it.

Room tip: Luxury suites, Room 8 and Room 9 have plunge pools

Beautiful single-storey hotel spread over several attractive public buildings and lodge buildings. It’s all about contemporary African and it works very well. Our bedroom (24) was spacious, had it’s own veranda and was nicely appointed with a modern bathroom and good quality bed. Room service was excellent. We were at least 200m from the main reception and riding buildings which doesn’t sound a lot but at 38oC it can be a bit too far! The hotel included a game drive every morning and every evening of the stay. Be prepared for long days as the typical agenda would be:-

05:00 Early morning wake-up call.
05:45 Beverages and (nice) snacks served in bar before departure at 6am.
09:30 Return from drive and breakfast immediately (delicious.
13:00 Lunch.
16:30 Meet in bar at for tea and light snacks!
17:00 Depart on drive.
19:00 Stop for sundowners while on safari.
19:45 Return in darkness to hotel.
20:15 Dinner.
and so on.

The hotel team were very good tending to our every need but by far the most impressive aspect of the Kapama game lodge was the safari team’s love of the animals and their dedication to them.

This safari camp, which is located very near Hoedspruit airport, did everything right! Our twice-daily game drives (guided by Allister with Carlos as the tracker) were perfectly done in a comfortable vehicle----we saw unbelievable African animal settings. The food is wonderful. My wife had a birthday and the dining room staff brought her a cake and sang African songs for her. The lodging is most comfortable---modern but in African safari style. There is really nothing more you could want!

Kapama Southern Lodge caters for well healed elderly market and the overall safari experience was extremely disappointing.

We were given a very nice spacious room with it's own pool area but the reason you come for this is not for the room.

Kapama is a private reserve which is fences in the animals and it soon became apparent that the next 3 days were going to be a drive around what is nothing more than a uk based safari park with accommodation.

At the time that we went (Sept 16) animals could be seen in a waterhole at the bottom of the lodge complex (Wildebeest, buffalo, Giraffe, Zebra) and on asking our guide if we could go there he said no that the area was off route and not allowed. The grounds has a DOMESTICATED set out grazers that wander around to lend the feel that you are in the wild.

As the safari continued It soon was clear that Kapama is a training ground for guides and trackers, these staff were very young and seemed to lack a connection between their groups. There was confusion and disagreement that we picked up on between our 2 observers and at times as we headed off in search of an alleged sighting which then turned into a 90 minute drive cris-crossing other vehicles. The tracker, at times seemed to lose interest and from our position looked like he wanted to be elsewhere.

When asked if we could go to another section we were told only if a ranger agrees to swap an area. At one point we were on the road and asked if we could go 30 feet towards a waterhole to get a clear photo shot. The ranger said that the management had forbidden off road riding. Grazing animals were being fed hay by the park to ensure the sustainability of animals rather than survival of the fittest.

I could go on but if you want true safari experience then head to the unfenced area of Mpumalanga and the parks that border Kruger.

To sum up Kapama it is a managed theme park that caters for the a market that flies in to the adjacent airport and within 10 minutes you are in a fenced in bush experience. GO ELSEWHERE IF YOU TRULY WANT THE EXPERIENCE
