My husband and I are both practicing Catholics and I have always wanted to see the place. That being said, I do not think you need to be Catholic to appreciate the peace and serenity that both of us felt on our visit. We took some of the dirt and also used the opportunity to pray for our family. I would like to come back sometime and stay longer.

You won't likely stay long, but the chapel is so very beautiful and unlike grander churches and cathedrals. Lovely!

El Santuario de Chimayo compound is a peaceful respite for persons of all faiths. As one walks through the grounds, one immediately notices hundreds of crucifixes and photos of loved ones left by pilgrims seeking solace for suffering or offering thanks for redemption. The sight of these offerings alone causes one to stop and marvel at the power of faith.

To complete your visit, be sure to step into the tiny shrine that legend says is built on the spot where a priest noticed a strange light on the hill and uncovered the crucifix that still hangs above the altar. After pausing to soak in the peacefulness of this spot, you should then pass through the small opening at the front into a chamber lined with benches and cast-off crutches. It is then that you will notice an even smaller opening into another room where the pit containing the holy dirt can be found.

As a non-catholic, I was not as familiar as many visitors with the significance of this site. I found the website very helpful in learning more about the legends associated with the crucifix and the healing power of the dirt.

This side trip was interesting. If you are Catholic it would be considered a "Mecca". If you are not a participating catholic it would be hard to understand the traditions and meanings of this site. The architecture is beautiful and gives you an idea of the history and culture of this place. I suggest you skip the side merchants. It makes this sacred place very secular.

This place is historically interesting, but I think one needs to be Catholic to fully understand what happens here. There is a well of "miracle dirt" that supposedly has healing properties. We were treated rudely by a woman as we entered the chapel. We felt very uncomfortable and left quickly. We were also asked if we were Catholic by a couple as we entered the compound. The message we received was that the casual tourist was not very welcome here.
