Owner description: The "Lourdes" of America, where miracles are thought to happen.

This place is historically interesting, but I think one needs to be Catholic to fully understand what happens here. There is a well of "miracle dirt" that supposedly has healing properties. We were treated rudely by a woman as we entered the chapel. We felt very uncomfortable and left quickly. We were also asked if we were Catholic by a couple as we entered the compound. The message we received was that the casual tourist was not very welcome here.

Beautiful church---and amazing history here. Visited on a Sunday morning just as 10:30 mass was about to begin. The sanctuary is very rustic with amazing retablos on both walls near the altar and the historic 'Lord of Esquipula' crucifix. The earth at the site is said to have healing powers and attracts pilgrims for that reason. The surrounding area has quaint shops and galleries. Definitely worth a stop!

Spiritual place...some trash around and a bit dirty. Much historical relevance to the surrounding communitites.

We were here on an early Sunday morning. We parked our car on the parkingplace and quietly walked up the path and stairs to the area where the church is. There is a kind of park with memorials and little shops around the church. It all was very tidy, peacefull and quiet. We loved it. We entered the church, said a little prayer for my dad who just passed away and admired the beautifull altar pilars. All the way in the front is a door to the left side, there are many photographs and memorabilia of people who were healed or find help here. The healing sand is here too. Little scoops are provided, if you didn't bring a container of plastic bag, some nice little containers can be bought in the little shops around the church. We went outside and walked around the church and felt pretty amazed by the serenity of it all.Don't forget to visit the nearby Santo Nino

The El Santuario de Chimayo is a beautiful church located along the High Road from Taos to Santa Fe, New Mexico. The church has a long history, the sanctuary very beautiful, and this should be visited, no matter one's faith, at least once.
