Review of Sonya’s Cookin

We were a bit road weary from an early departure and needed a good meal. We looked up Trip Advisor for several towns on our route, read the reviews and selected Sonya's. We are so happy we did!

The food was fresh, hot and tasty. The coffee was delicious and plentiful. The customer service was top quality by any standard. The other impressive thing to note is the cleanliness of this restaurant. It is clear that many hungry patrons have passed through these doors but seldom have I seen a restaurant of any type that was as clean and welcoming as this one. Thank you!!

We were in the area to watch the hot air balloons lift off. We were in town a little early and decided to give Sonya's a try. It does appear to be an older diner but it was clean. It also appears to be a favorite of locals which typically indicates it's worth the stop. We were waited on quickly and our server was friendly. Our breakfast was reasonably priced, serving size was adequate and taste was very good. I liked the fact that they had the option of downsizing portions, i.e., I was able to order the same thing my husband ordered (eggs, hashbrowns, biscuit and gravy) but in a smaller portion than his. We would definitely stop in here again if we were in the area.

We ate late on the evening of Fathers Day. EVERY staff person was friendly and checked on us multiple times. We were served fresh, delicious salsa with chips that were warm, thick, and plentiful. We ordered green chile chicken enchiladas and told our waitress we were going to share. Instead of bringing an extra plate, it was divided in the kitchen. The green chile was yummy. The rice and beans were cooked to perfection. The chicken was plentiful. I'm not sure how either of us could have eaten an entire plate. As we were at the end of our meal, one of the waitresses asked if we wanted a free piece of cake. It's chocolate she said. We agreed. She told us it was for Fathers Day. The cake was moist and flavorful. Our meal, for 2 people was $6.99. We left a nice tip.
We were so pleased with our experience that we returned for breakfast. Once again everyone was happy and friendly. Our coffee was brought quickly and refilled often. We ordered huevos rancheros- green chile, to share. Once again our meal was split in the kitchen. There were beans and hash brown potatoes as sides. A fresh tortilla for each of us. The over medium eggs were just right. We knew it was a favorite local spot when we saw the table of older men gathered to spread the events of the weekend. We call that "a table of knowledge". If we find ourselves in Bloomfield again we will eat here. The bathroom was clean (as was the entire restaurant). There's a nice mural on the hall leading to the restrooms.

The interior needed renovation. The chicken was overcooked, vegetables over cooked (mushy). The person at Super 8 recommended this to us, not happy with the recommendation.

A typical small-town diner - spacious, friendly staff, good food and lots of it. What makes Sonya's special is they cook real New Mexican dishes, which to me is one of the great joys of visiting New Mexico.

We visited for supper, then the next morning for breakfast. Food was great both times. If you're in the area, Sonya's is a good place to try.
