(+)Location on the beachfront was great. Although the area is on the cusp of some significant resort style developments presently there are only a couple of resorts all quite spread apart effectively making you feel you almost have the beach to yourself.

(-)What a terrible start! The resort is dated, very tired and maintenance questionable. On the way to our room, staff informed us we were being upgraded and what a lovely surprise we thought. The A/C in our 'first' room didn't work at all and some of the lights continually flickered. We were moved to another room about 1hr later. This 2nd room was slightly musty upon entry, the bath had soiling in it and the plug set with stagnant water pooling around it. The A/C wasn't very efficient and with the compressor mounted on the roof (which wasn't insulated) the noise emanating from it almost continuously (even when the A/C was turned off!!!) sounded like an industrial meat grinder! Every time you left the room you had to remove the key from the power slot meaning no A/C throughout the day to keep the room bearable. This meant returning to a furnace each afternoon. Linen was worn thin and had become discoloured to off-white. TV choices (in English) were extremely limited to channels such as BBC World News & CNBC whilst reception was grainy at best. The bed was as hard as a slab (not firm ...hard), uncomfortable and was placed on a huge slab of timber painted the same colour as the floor. This resulted in regularly cracking your shin against the corner breaking skin, bruising etc. Whilst the room's appearance may have been 'chic' the design is impractical, uncomfortable and downright dangerous. I nearly tripped over on a number of occasions. I wasn't the only one either. I conducted a little visual survey and observed numerous people with grazing and bruises to their shins!
We were at this resort with friends and their room, along with both the 'upgraded room and our second room were all identical. Apart from charging even more $$$ - I have no idea what the upgrade actually could have been? Interestingly, I noted another 'suite' having its faulty A/C being replaced whilst according to staff, yet another needed the compressor to be re-gassed.
The bar/dining area had fans placed strategically around working continuously and that certainly helped make those areas pleasant in the hot conditions. The rooms all had high vaulted ceilings - why on earth they wouldn't install a ceiling fan in them is frankly unfathomably ridiculous. Night one we tried the dining room. Very little selection, the Thai Beef Salad was like trying to chew jerky it was that tough and the couple of beers we ordered couldn't have been in the fridge more than a couple of minutes or either their fridge (just like our A/C) wasn't working. They were tepid at best. Prices? Offensive is a term that could be used and that is before the 7% VAT and 10% staff surcharge the menu states they are "entitled to charge". Drink prices are also way over the top being 4-5 times the price than the little store across the road which was also icy cold. There are a couple of eateries/bars no more than 5 minutes walk down the beach which were far superior in menu selection, flavours and significantly cheaper called CC Beach Bar & Restaurant and Phuphat Resort.
I raised the room issues with staff at the front desk. The response was a courteous sorry from staff and no response or acknowledgement from management.

This may have been a 4.5 star resort when first built and having the accommodation options to themselves. Basics such as the beach towels were very worn and frayed all around the edges. Things like this along with the lack of updating and maintenance back that rating right back. Definitely not worth the nightly rate currently being charged.

Dear Ian M,

thank you for your time to review Aava Resort & Spa.
It is nice to hear you've enjoyed Khanom beaches.

I am sorry about the air-conditioning problems and all inconvenience it has caused to you and that overall your holiday with us did not seem to meet your expectations.

Aalto restaurant is ala carte, quality restaurant, using only best, and sometimes it means, imported ingredients. Some people enjoy more simple and cheaper food in more traditional surroundings. We do not even try to compete with those kind of restaurants.

All restaurants who pay their VAT and according the law salaries and social security for their staff, add VAT and service charge to the bills.

Wishing you a lovely spring!

With kind regards,

The place was nice with design and location. But the bad thing was their service and staff which make bad impression while we stay there. They were kind of lack of attention to Thais while offers good service to foreigners. I would say that all customers should be treated equally if they are professional hotel and trained staffs.

Sawadee kha, khun thpmm,

Thank you for your comment about our staff service.
It is our pride to serve all nationalities with same, respectful and friendly manners.

Domestic market brings 30% of our revenue and we have huge amount of returning customers among Thais.

Some times, this kind of impression might come from the customer him/herself when being middle of Western clients.
However, this matter will be deeply discussed with our staff and they will be trained more.

With kind regards,

A lovely little boutique resort. The location is
Fantastic. We stayed for 5 nights.
The rooms are on the smaller side and yes, ask for a bed topper. But we spent no time in our room, we were either pool side, swimming in the lovely calm sea or enjoying happy hour in the restaurant.

The hotel is situated right on the beach very close to the sea. The poolside villas are great with the sea view but all rooms are good. Loved the breakfasts with fresh local fruit and lots of omelettes, yoghurt, shakes and local dishes to choose from.Food in Aalto restaurant was very good. It was quite windy and could not swim in the sea every day. Easy few minutes walk to the nearby C c Bar for lunch or dinner if you need change. Wifi worked perfectly all the time. Great, friendly and helpful staff. No disturbance from the nearby construction.

Stayed here last April on a family holiday to visit my brother, with my wife, 2 daughters and 1 boyfriend.

We arranged for a driver from the hotel to meet us at the airport to take us to the hotel, who was waiting for us when we arrived with the journey taking about 50 minutes due to a heavy rain.

On arriving at the hotel we were met with by a very helpful reception, who took care of our bags and quickly sorted out the two rooms for my daughters and me and my wife’s room. Unfortunately during the night me and my wife found out that the frogs near the pond next to our room were very noisy during the night, but a word with reception in the morning and the manager quickly arranged for us to move to another room nearer the pool and no frogs

The hotel was everything we had hoped, set on an ideal picturesque beach and very quiet, just perfect for getting away from everything and just relaxing.

The breakfast each morning was excellent with a choice of 5 or 6 options, which the staff quickly brought out to you and were always helpful to provide any assistance they could. We ate in the restaurant the first night we were there, while we got our bearings and again the food was of an excellent quality, with all the staff being very helpful.

All the rooms were all well maintained with a good shower and comfy bed, even a visit from a lizard to my daughters room one night made the stay enjoyable and fun, chasing it around for 30 minutes until we managed to usher it outside.

During the stay we found the manager was always available to talk to and his staff were always more than happy to help.

The sea was lovely and warm and a pleasure to go swimming in every day, with an abundance of sea life to look at.

Not the cheapest hotel to stay at but I would recommend it every time, for memories that will never go away.
