Let me start by saying that Phil's Place was perfect for my partner and I.

We travel a lot, but not often for vacation. We were in Singapore recently on business, and decided to take a weekend to Bali.

We left wishing we had more time. We had a fantastic time, in no small part due to staying at Phil's Place.

The rooms were clean and comfortable. The little pool was great - very relaxing way to end a day out and about.

The staff were wonderful and friendly. Breakfast each morning was delicious.

Travel to/from the airport was arranged with help from the staff, and was easy.

My one caution is: do not leave Phil's Place without a map and/or a really good sense of direction. Take note of markers around the place. You may get lost trying to find your way back (we certainly did on our first day - but that was our own fault).

It is a bit of a trek to the beach, but a cab or a motorbike can remedy that very easily. We walked, and it was about 15 minutes (not bad). Gave us a chance to walk through the area, which we enjoyed. The gay bars and restaurants are all a very short (<5 minute) walk away.

If we ever return to Bali, there will be no discussion about where we stay. There will be no debate. There will be no consideration. We'll immediately think of Phil's Place, and make the appropriate arrangements.

Always stayed in big hotels before but this trip has spoiled me for villa style accommodation. A small private oasis tucked away in a quiet lane but right in the middle of Seminyak is Phil's Place. A short walk to a huge choice of restaurants, shopping, the beach & night life. Would be difficult to find the first time except the villa provides pick up service & in our case friends drove us there finding it easily using Google Maps on the iphone & I was so pleased to find the Villa tucked away quietly in a back lane.
Being a five bedroom Villa one might expect some compromises with the facilities but nothing was missing. Room was large & private with efficient quiet air con, super king size bed, plenty of cupboard space, safe, huge en-suite bathroom with plenty of hot water & accoutrements supplied. Room & bathroom made up impeccably every day.
Relaxing in the pool with a gin & tonic was a wonderful way to recover from a shopping or beach excursion.
Balinese staff were very friendly & helpful & provide drinks & meals on site or just walk out the lane to your typical plentiful array of restaurants. This is a great place to stay on your own, with a friend or a group of friends.

Just stayed with Phil and his excellent team of staff who welcomed us and looked after our every need. Nothing was too much and we were always greeted with genuine smiles. The location is really great for shopping, restaurants and bars. Also the beach is ever too far away - 10 minutes walk. Excellent service rooms clean and practical. Definitely returning soon.

Room Tip: Premier room is the best, get you own terrace and massage in the package.

When I first arrived here I was fortunate enough be travelling by car. My driver knew the exact location. However, after having stepped out to explore it was not so easy to find my way back: the small alley in this area is not lit at all and one needs to know their way around to find the right path. Furthermore the guesthouse is not marked with a business sign and there were no lights coming from the reception area.

Located directly next door to the guesthouse is a large construction site, which is quite noisy starting at about 8 a.m. in the morning and lasting till around 5 p.m.

On the very next day I spoke with the proprietor about this situation and he mentioned all guests are offered a complimentary massage as compensation for the inconvenience due to the construction. Fortunately for me he also offered a daily free cocktail.

In order to make it easier for guests to find this location (especially in the evening hours) I recommended printing business cards with an area map located on the backside. Phil promised to take care of this right away.

My premium room was located on the first floor and had a rather large roof terrace beautiful decorated with deck furniture and tropical plants.

A special breakfast menu was offered daily.

The staff is very competent, service oriented and congenial.

Room Tip: The premium room with private roof terrace is to be recommended

Dear Hansedynamo

Thank you for your review. To all guests: THE NEW VILLA CONSTRUCTION NEXT TO PHIL's PLACE IS NOW FINISHED! We apologise for the disruption that this caused last year.

Regarding your other feedback: We do have business cards with a local map. We were temporarily out of stock in December when you stayed.

Now that the neighbouring construction is finished, the area outside is better lit and we are about to install lighting in our driveway and to place the sign at the gate.

Best regards
Phil

My husband and I stayed here recently and loved it. The location is close enough to the city center for everything to be readily accessible, but once you enter the home you're shut off from the hustle and bustle. The staff was very attentive and helpful and always polite. Once the construction is finished next door, things will be much quieter. Be mindful that this is a home, not a resort, so there's limited outdoor space for sunning.
