The Hotel consists of a splendid Cape house to which has been added an airy Conservatory which now serves as the dining room overlooking the garden, and a number of rooms which are like little cottages with verandahs looking onto gardens and fountains. Traditional style furnishings and very comfortable. There is a great pool in the garden. The service and helpfulness of staff is outstanding, and the restaurant is very good offering a small but interesting menu.
Swellendam is not the most obvious place to stop but its location is very beautiful and there are other excellent restaurants in town. The Bonnivale/Robertson wineries in the Breede Valley offer great tasting and tours and very reasonable value wines.

Room Tip: All rooms are quiet looking out onto gardens

We came for longer this year and brought our daughter and her family too!! A lazy day by the pool one day and exploring Swellendam and the Tradouw Pass on others. We had lovely garden rooms and were thoroughly spoilt by all the helpful staff who cannot do enough to help you. The best beds and bathrooms of anywhere we stayed on our whole South African holiday. A real treat, thank you all. See you next year!

Room Tip: They are all great !

I'll be honest. We had never planned a trip to Swellendam, but after a little internet research, and looking at our planned holiday route, I fell upon this gorgeous property and swiftly changed our entire itinerary in order to spend two nights here. I am SO pleased that we did!

The property itself is so beautiful and very different to anywhere else we'd stayed on our trip. The hospitality is amongst the best we have experienced anywhere in the world. Ian and Alison should be proud of the wonderful team they've grown.

We arrived in the early evening after finding the property with ease, Fidi and one of the other staff were opening the doors of the car as soon as we pulled up with the brightest, most welcoming of smiles and Ian was waving from the steps of the conservatory. I don't think I've ever had such a warm and genuine welcome anywhere!

We were quickly shown to our room and left to refresh after our day on the road. The whole place is incredibly quaint and old fashioned, but with everything you could possibly want or need. Don't come here expecting flash five star accommodation and amenities, this is subtle luxury and a nod to brilliant attention to detail. (Lining umbrellas up, washing the cars, home comforts, candles and oil burners in the bathroom, home made snacks in the mini bar, emergency hangover amenities in the wardrobe) The room was spacious, the bathroom also large, the rooms smell amazing thanks to products from the local 'RAIN Spa'.

We read the guest info folder which enabled us to learn about the house and what Alison and her husband had done to the property since first purchasing it, and wow have they done well!

We had had a very late lunch on our way so didn't need to eat dinner that night, instead popping up to the house for a drink. Ian greeted us like old friends and was happy to walk us around the ground floor of the house giving us a bit of history.

We moved through to the lounge and sat at the bar (the soft seating was already taken up) and asked for some local wine recommendations. Fidi suggested a delicious local wine for me, and a beer for my husband. Ian came in to join us and we had a lovely chat about anything and everything wine and hotel related!

We headed for bed exhausted after our day of travel, loved the delicious little chocolates and weather report with turn down and soon fell into a deep sleep in the silence of Swellendam with the rain lightly pattering on the roof. Heaven.

Breakfast was a 3 course delicious extravaganza - we don't really 'do' breakfast, but you couldn't miss this - it was exquisite! I have a dairy allergy and on the second day couldn't eat either of the planned courses and ordered bacon and eggs instead. No problem for the chef, but a little disappointed that despite me mentioning in the booking that I couldn't eat milk products, there wasn't an alternative thought about for me. (Probably better for the waistline though!)

We opted for dinner on our second evening, and this was the highlight for us. The food was exceptional and not what we had expected to find in sleepy Swellendam - the chef is top class and it was a lovely touch that he came out to greet the diners after service. Thank you again for our delicious dinner, arguably the best we had all holiday!

We got to meet Alison at dinner which was really wonderful and made such a difference to speak to her about 'her baby'. Alison, you really have done an amazing job and have fulfilled your vision!

We are seasoned international travellers and have spent a lot of time in hotels and this one really stands out amongst them. It felt to both of us like we were coming home, and would love to return one day. I urge anyone reading this who is in two minds as to whether to venture out to Swellendam to just do it. This hotel is so welcoming and relaxing you will be very pleased that you did!

I'm only sad that we didn't get a chance to sample the afternoon tea so we'll just have to go back now...!

jemimapuddleduck (LOVE your name :)), this is the most spectacular review! Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience in such wonderful detail and for your exceptionally kind words. We have shared this with all of the Schoone Oordt family to hugely happy smiles and hearts.

We do apologise for overlooking your milk allergy. The kitchen is usually very good at remembering and we have loads of milk substitutes available, from coconut to almond milk. So sorry that didn't share that with you.

We loved spending time with you both and very much look forward to welcoming you to Schoone Oordt and Swellendam again. Soon.

With much love from the entire Schoone Oordt Family.

The Schoone Oordt Country House was absolutely amazing. The gardens were lush and well tended. The room was so comfortable and luxurious. The afternoon tea, dinner and breakfast was divine! We loved every moment here. The owners and staff were friendly and helpful and made you feel at home. We are already planning our next trip back.

We had a lovely two nights here. On arrival, waiting for us there was fresh lemonade or iced tea, with scones or other cakes. The team are friendly and welcoming and the house/gardens are lovely - even in the rain! We found the breakfast on the second morning s bit rich, but the poached pears and pancakes were lovely. We could have opted for a normal cooked breakfast but decided to go with the different option which we just found a little rich. However overall a lovely stay. They have done a superb job in renovating it, and it was lovely to read and see pictures of this transformation.

Thank you so much for your kind words and lovely review. We're so sorry that you weren't thrilled with your breakfast main course, we would happily have made you something lighter or different had we known. We are sorry that we missed that extra star from you and hope that we'll earn it on your next visit. Thank you.
With love from all of us.
