My friend and I stayed at 81 on Church, while taking a December road trip through the Great Karoo and Klein Karoo. We only stayed here for one night, which in hindsight, was far too little...this guest house and our rooms were absolutely beautiful, well-managed and well-appointed, and totally relaxing. Prince Albert was also our favorite village that we visited during the Karoo road trip (with some very strong competition!), with plenty to do/see/eat.
We each had one of the newer cottages in the rear of the property. I can't comment on the guest rooms in the historic house (though I'm sure they're lovely), but when I visit here again, I'll definitely book another cottage. They're like having your own little retreat set amidst beautiful Karoo gardens, complete with a stylish kitchenette and sitting area, an outdoor shower, and French doors that open up onto your own private patio in the garden. The beds are extremely comfortable with high-quality bedding, and there is both a ceiling fan and a/c for comfort.
The owner/manager, Johann, was also an amazing host! Prior to our arrival (following an 11-hour drive from Joburg), Johann made reservations for my friend and I at a nearby restaurant, so we didn't have to stress about it on arrival. He gives us good tips on what to see in the town during our short visit, and provided us with some interesting history about the Swartberg Pass (which we subsequently drove - absolutely amazing), while also giving us privacy.
I can't wait to return and relax in this Karoo paradise!
