Yes its commercialised and busy but it really does give you a quick overview of the wineries in the area. Try the small wineries rather than the big much more fun. My personal favourite wasPlaisir de Merle - what service, wine and view. Least favourite was Boschendal - if you are not part of a coach tour don't bother.

The idea of the tram/bus is great but you need to do some research yourself before you go to get the best out if it, and not just on the trams own website. Although the guide on board gives a bit of information about the various vineyards, it’s all from a prepared script and very ‘shouty’. We aimed to do 3 visits on the orange line, but if we had researched how much was at the first stop (Babylonstoren) we would have stayed there for longer as the others were a bit disappointing in comparison. Also, we asked on the bus about the best ones to visit for red wine drinkers, to be told they all did both. Then, on the way back when there we didn’t have time for another visit, the ‘script’ said the next stop was the best for red wine! Particularly if there are 4 or more people, I would price up a private tour to take you around by car/minibus. The tastings themselves are very reasonable- max. £5- a person.

You really can’t not do this when visiting Franschhoek, it’s a fabulous mix of tram and train and of course no need to worry about how much lovely wine your drinking, highly recommend.

We done the yellow route and really enjoyed it. Book your trip before you arrive as it is busy and hard to get a specific route. Only thing was we felt the resturant we had lunch in delayed our lunch so we ended up staying there for 3 hours as missed the tram we wanted to get after 2 hours!! Other than that its a fabulous relaxing day drinking wine and champagne.

What a fantastic experience, this is a must do excursion for anyone visiting Franschhoek.
It’s is a very well oiled machine, with everything perfectly to time and on schedule, literally to the second.
The staff are really friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable, especially the twin brothers working the trams( forgot your names sorry! )
The choice of wineries are very good (orange line) and super cheap to do wine tasting.
I would definitely do this again !!

This is an old tram service that was changed in 2012 to a tourist hop-on, hop-off service to visit a selection of vineyards for tastings. There are several different routes and the service is reliable and efficient. You spend a minimum of an hour at each vineyard. Max 6 stops in a day. Note - the tram only covers part of the route, the remainder being done by bus.

We booked the wine tram initially because it seemed the most practical way to visit several vineyards without a car, but the ride turned out to be a very enjoyable part of the excursion in itself - the quirky old bus and tram and the company of our charming guides Joy and Curt. The organization is amazing, you have several lines (we took the orange one) and an efficient timetable with pickup every hour, so that you can nicely plan your day. The bus/tram stops at many wineries, which is fine but we thought it was hectic to try to do all of them - we chose four, and finally only did three, including one were we had an extended picnic lunch in a beautiful garden. Just a piece of practical advice - book the tram well in advance , and also do your homework on the wineries before you go, so you can plan your day and reserve for lunch.

We did the Orange route today. Well worth doing. We left at 9-30 and returned about 4pm but could have been out for longer. It was the experience for us, the bus and the tram. The stops are very similar, my husband just did one tasting, too hot for me. The scenery en route is stunning, the guides, we had Raoul and Robin, identical twins, who were very informative and helpful. You can be picked up after about 35 minutes at each stop rather than the hour. Do your homework first, we thought we had done but not enough.

Honestly the staff were friendly but were there to sell ilus the tastings which were expensive. They were not happy when we skipped too many stops. There were 7 stops on red route but we could only do 6. Fine. An hour per stop is norm. But very ruahed. Felt pressurised when in winery and also if we skipped one! Now we did spend two hours in the one we had lunch in (roca,stop5) and it was fab. I also wish there was more info on winerys provided in advance so we could make informed decisions and plans (e.g. we couldnt get a picnic as had not ordered 24hrs in advance)
