“Sahara Motel in North Wildwood - Pining for a good night's sleep”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 August 2011

Sahra Motel Review
The Sahara Motel in North Wildwood is currently (as of the date of this review) listed as the #1 motel in North Wildwood. We found some problems with the motel, but don’t know how that may affect the rating. There certainly seem to be many who have had a fabulous time at the Sahara Motel, and this review in no way takes anything away from those happy vacationers!

Motel Location:

The Sahara Motel in North Wildwood, NJ, is very conveniently located right next to the beach and boardwalk, on 18th Avenue in North Wildwood, NJ. The motel is a traditional North Wildwood motel, in that it does not have elevators. The building is three stories tall, and faces the beach and boardwalk in all rooms.

The Motel has a very nice swimming pool, plenty of chairs for all the guests to enjoy, and gas grills available for cooking. The Motel has plenty of parking spaces, so that each room has a space for one car. There is a nice deck for guests to use, with views of the boardwalk, beach and ocean.

The Sahara Motel is very close to all the major attractions in North Wildwood. Access to the beach is quick and easy, the boardwalk is just a few yards away, and the major piers on the boardwalk, Morey’s Pier and Mariner’s Pier, are not far away. The boardwalk has all the food, fun and excitement families have come to expect from the Wildwoods.

The North Wildwood neighborhood is nice, safe and fairly clean. You can walk the area safely at night with no worries.

On motel location, I give Sahara five stars

Motel Amenities:

The room we stayed in was fairly small. My girlfriend and I kept bumping into each other. The televisions were small, and were not flat-screen. In the bedroom was a tiny 12 inch television that reminded me of the one I had in my first apartment – in 1983. While that kind of nostalgia is fun for some people, it’s not what we paid for in this motel. At more than $200 per night, plus taxes, we expected something a little more up to date.

The shower and bathroom were wonderful and clean. We found the shower to be very invigorating and nice.

And now, let’s talk about the beds….

The one thing, the most basic thing, that a motel or hotel should provide is a good night’s rest. The bed should be roomy and comfortable. The mattress should be soft and inviting. The sheets should be soft and comfy.

But that’s not what we experienced at the Sahara. The bed was too small, and since the bedroom was also tiny, each bed was pushed up flush against the wall. That meant crawling up onto the bed from the end in order to keep from crawling over my girlfriend. Not exactly convenient. The beds were also too narrow. And the mattresses were so hard, that neither my girlfriend nor I got a restful night of sleep any of the nights we stayed at the Sahara. It was like sleeping on pine boards with pillows. Again, a good night’s rest is the minimum to be expected at a motel. The Sahara Motel did not meet that minimum requirement.

On motel amenities, I give Sahara two stars.

Motel Services:

Check in and check out was smooth and easy. The clerk was helpful and friendly. All in all, the folks running the Sahara Motel are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable.

Maid service was good, but we did notice maids coming out of neighboring rooms with burning cigarettes in their mouths. We are non-smokers, and prefer that the maids NOT be smoking in our room while cleaning it.

The Sahara DOES NOT offer free Wi-Fi internet access. Instead, Sahara has a plan which requires you to PAY for Wi-Fi internet access. This may have been an acceptable policy five years ago, when Wi-Fi was fairly new, and it was not unusual to pay for the service. But today, many urban centers provide free Wi-Fi over entire cities. Most, if not all, motels and hotels offer complimentary Wi-Fi internet access for their guests. Last winter, we stayed at a country inn in Vermont for $89 per night – with full complimentary Wi-Fi access. But at the Sahara, while paying more than $200 per night, you are still required to pay for this simple convenience. I found that practice to be completely unacceptable. The motel should offer this service for free as a courtesy to its guests.

We did notice a lack of MAID SERVICE / DO NOT DISTURB tags for the doors. Our room had no tag so the maid did not know when to clean our room. She just looked through our window to see if we were there or not! (I’m not kidding!). Perhaps the tags, like the Wi-Fi, were available for an extra fee?

On motel amenities, I give Sahara two stars.

Average for the Sahara Motel is three stars.

Recommendations:

I recommend that the Sahara make the following changes immediately. Replace the mattresses with some softer and more comfortable ones. Have a technical support team come in and update the motel for free Wi-Fi. Equip all rooms with the DO NOT DISTURB tags. Remind the maids not to smoke in guest’s rooms.

Long term, but not as immediate as the above, the TV sets can be updated. I view that as secondary to the comfort of the beds and convenience of Wi-Fi for the guests.

We just got married may 21st and our honeymoon was at the Sahara. Best decision we made was to stay here. Kenny and Nick were so friendly and hospitable Kenny even upgraded our room for us at no extra charge, the maid service was great, the room was clean, the pool was great and the beaches are the best. We will be back each year, best place ever.

Room Tip: Second floor ocean view away from deck for peace

Kenny and Nick were so very family friendly. They were always available whether it be day or night, and were very involved with everyone staying here. This has been a wonderful vacation due to this. Kenny was more than helpful to my husband, who is handicapped. The rooms were very big, and extremely clean. Always fresh towels and linens. The pool was very clean as well as the laundry facility. It is an absolutely excellent location, as it is the start of the boardwalk and is quiet at night. It is a short walk to the ocean as well. We already booked out week for next year, and will be more than happy to tell our friends about this gem of a motel and awesome owners!! Thank you Kenny and Nick for your caring, compassionate and courteous personality, you made this a great vacation!!!

We stayed Memorial weekend 2011. Traffic was lighter than expected, we arrived around noon and I thought I would take a chance to see if we could check in early. We received a friendly smile and a warm welcome from one of the owners and a "no problem" with early arrival. After settling in we were relaxing by the pool within an hour. The room was clean upon arrival and cleaned daily by the housekeeping staff, the beds very comfortable (great night sleep), the decks and pool were very clean and remained in order throughout the weekend. Parking was always available. The office was open late each night and the owners were available and more than happy to attend to the needs of the guest. I have stayed at a number of hotels in Wildwood over the years and this is by far my most welcoming comfortable stay ever. Upon check out Kenny kindly asked if we enjoyed our stay, I believe he sincerely cares that the guest have a great time (other hotels never asked). This is an excellent family hotel, which I highly recommend, and I look forward to returning to on my next visit to Wildwood. Thank you for a great weekend!!!!
