Sahra Motel Review
The Sahara Motel in North Wildwood is currently (as of the date of this review) listed as the #1 motel in North Wildwood. We found some problems with the motel, but don’t know how that may affect the rating. There certainly seem to be many who have had a fabulous time at the Sahara Motel, and this review in no way takes anything away from those happy vacationers!
The Sahara Motel in North Wildwood, NJ, is very conveniently located right next to the beach and boardwalk, on 18th Avenue in North Wildwood, NJ. The motel is a traditional North Wildwood motel, in that it does not have elevators. The building is three stories tall, and faces the beach and boardwalk in all rooms.
The Motel has a very nice swimming pool, plenty of chairs for all the guests to enjoy, and gas grills available for cooking. The Motel has plenty of parking spaces, so that each room has a space for one car. There is a nice deck for guests to use, with views of the boardwalk, beach and ocean.
The Sahara Motel is very close to all the major attractions in North Wildwood. Access to the beach is quick and easy, the boardwalk is just a few yards away, and the major piers on the boardwalk, Morey’s Pier and Mariner’s Pier, are not far away. The boardwalk has all the food, fun and excitement families have come to expect from the Wildwoods.
The North Wildwood neighborhood is nice, safe and fairly clean. You can walk the area safely at night with no worries.
On motel location, I give Sahara five stars
The room we stayed in was fairly small. My girlfriend and I kept bumping into each other. The televisions were small, and were not flat-screen. In the bedroom was a tiny 12 inch television that reminded me of the one I had in my first apartment – in 1983. While that kind of nostalgia is fun for some people, it’s not what we paid for in this motel. At more than $200 per night, plus taxes, we expected something a little more up to date.
The shower and bathroom were wonderful and clean. We found the shower to be very invigorating and nice.
And now, let’s talk about the beds….
The one thing, the most basic thing, that a motel or hotel should provide is a good night’s rest. The bed should be roomy and comfortable. The mattress should be soft and inviting. The sheets should be soft and comfy.
But that’s not what we experienced at the Sahara. The bed was too small, and since the bedroom was also tiny, each bed was pushed up flush against the wall. That meant crawling up onto the bed from the end in order to keep from crawling over my girlfriend. Not exactly convenient. The beds were also too narrow. And the mattresses were so hard, that neither my girlfriend nor I got a restful night of sleep any of the nights we stayed at the Sahara. It was like sleeping on pine boards with pillows. Again, a good night’s rest is the minimum to be expected at a motel. The Sahara Motel did not meet that minimum requirement.
On motel amenities, I give Sahara two stars.
Check in and check out was smooth and easy. The clerk was helpful and friendly. All in all, the folks running the Sahara Motel are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable.
Maid service was good, but we did notice maids coming out of neighboring rooms with burning cigarettes in their mouths. We are non-smokers, and prefer that the maids NOT be smoking in our room while cleaning it.
The Sahara DOES NOT offer free Wi-Fi internet access. Instead, Sahara has a plan which requires you to PAY for Wi-Fi internet access. This may have been an acceptable policy five years ago, when Wi-Fi was fairly new, and it was not unusual to pay for the service. But today, many urban centers provide free Wi-Fi over entire cities. Most, if not all, motels and hotels offer complimentary Wi-Fi internet access for their guests. Last winter, we stayed at a country inn in Vermont for $89 per night – with full complimentary Wi-Fi access. But at the Sahara, while paying more than $200 per night, you are still required to pay for this simple convenience. I found that practice to be completely unacceptable. The motel should offer this service for free as a courtesy to its guests.
We did notice a lack of MAID SERVICE / DO NOT DISTURB tags for the doors. Our room had no tag so the maid did not know when to clean our room. She just looked through our window to see if we were there or not! (I’m not kidding!). Perhaps the tags, like the Wi-Fi, were available for an extra fee?
On motel amenities, I give Sahara two stars.
Average for the Sahara Motel is three stars.
I recommend that the Sahara make the following changes immediately. Replace the mattresses with some softer and more comfortable ones. Have a technical support team come in and update the motel for free Wi-Fi. Equip all rooms with the DO NOT DISTURB tags. Remind the maids not to smoke in guest’s rooms.
Long term, but not as immediate as the above, the TV sets can be updated. I view that as secondary to the comfort of the beds and convenience of Wi-Fi for the guests.
