Our kids took us out for our anniversary luncheon Sunday night. What a pleasant surprise. It's been years since we've been here. It sure was busy for lunch. Service was great. Menu was diversified. Bloody Mary's were great. We meandered around the grounds for sculptor afterward. It was a beautiful fall afternoon. Don't miss the donuts for desert, yummy...Yes, we would return.

Rat's turned out to be one of the best experiences on our trip to DC, Longwood Gardens, and New Jersey/New York. We drove from our stay near Longwood to get to Rat's in time for lunch and we are so glad we did. We have eaten at restaurants all over North America and Europe and this is one of most charming settings for lunch we have experienced. The name comes from a character in WIND IN THE WILLOWS. The decor is whimsical and country French, with a lovely patio overlooking a pond with rowboats and a Giverny bridge. The cafe is located on Grounds for Sculpture, so that you can stroll the many acres of interesting and charming sculpture placed strategically on the grounds. Food and service at Rat's was top-notch. The cinnamon "doughnuts" were especially good, along with the classic French onion soup, the warm shrimp salad, and the rabbit ragout. What a lovely afternoon! If only it were closer to home!

Rat's is surely an unusual name for a restaurant, unless, of course, you have read The Wind in the Willows as a child. Be sure to make a reservation, and make it early enough so you can see the grounds in some daylight. The water gardens are similar to the Monet gardens in France. Our party of four dined upstairs which was a quaint spot with several tables. The wait staff is excellent and attentive. We started with a 5-cheese platter for the table along with their artesan breads to choose from. Each entree' was well-prepared and delicious. The branzini fish entree' was especially good as well as the Icelandic char. The apple dessert was warmed and also a good choice. There are unusual ice creams to choose from such as Vietnamese coffee (excellent), however this diner thought that kaffir lime belongs in Thai food, not ice cream. All in all, a very nice experience for a special evening with friends.

My daughter and I were looking for a Boathouse NYC experience without having to go into the city on this beautiful Fall Day. A visit to the Sculpture Garden and lunch at Rats in Hamilton NJ was a perfect fit. The surroundings were beautiful, the staff attentive and the food delicious. We sat outside with a view of the beautiful gardens as a backdrop. We felt the lunch prices were not much more than those at any nice trendy restaurant and we were more than happy with our selections. I had the delicious roasted chicken and she had a turkey sandwich that wasn't just a bland sandwich..We shared a delicious peanut butter dessert that put smiles on both of our faces

Had our family holiday dinner at Rat's and I can only say that we all had a wonderful & relaxing evening. Our dinner was held in the private wine room which allowed us the room to move around and mingle with everyone. Prior to the dinner my sister and I worked with the catering manager to determine our appys ahead of time. We chose to not select dinner entries and let everyone pick off the regular menu. It truly was a memorable evening!
