We booked this at the last minute last summer. We were nervous about staying in a "upscale" motel. We had a great time! The room was very clean. It definitely had a motel feel. The room was also a bit on the small side, We stayed in a room with a pull out sofa and two queen beds. The room was also near the Rusty Nail which can get loud at night. However, when we were ready to put the kids to sleep, it was fine.

It was wonderful having umbrellas, towels and chairs waiting for you at the beach. The beach was a simple walk across the street. The Rusty Nail even delivered food to you at the beach. It was a very indulgent experience. We would stay again. Very pricey!

Got here from the reviews on TripAdvisor and were not disappointed. It's got a cool vibe and a great location. Also, the kids like the Mac n Cheese and we liked the outside bar. Not to be confused with a "resort." Simple hotel with a nice approach. Big rooms and great service. Loved the beach chairs and umbrellas. Within walking distance of everything. Great place to run and ride bikes. Also did the "Basic Training" class on the beach. Killer. Our first trip to Cape May....and the nicest beach town we've ever been to.

Room Tip: We were on the ground floor and seemed fine.

I never write reviews, but our stay at Beach Shack was so nice! Yes, it is a 1960's motel with new paint, but it is very clean, right across from the beach, and the beach service (chairs, umbrellas, and towels) is awesome! We weren't in the room much anyway. The location is ideal, in my opinion. It is close to everything but not too close.
The Rusty Nail has live music and a fire pit. It was like a family party every night with $1 Miller Lites on Monday night. The fish tacos were fantastic.
I have been going to Cape May for many, many years and now I have a new place to stay.

Room Tip: The second and third floors have a beach view.

Beach shack is known as the "happening spot" in Cape May NJ. Probably because they have live music at night and a kind of laid back beachy attitude there... (no alarm clocks or in room phones - so you can "get away from it all" - but really because everyone has a cell to do both.) The rooms were typical but had nice bedding and pillows. Ours had a tiny bath, but it did have a fridge and micro and was very clean. Walk across the street to the beach where they hotel has umbrellas and recliners for you. White uniformed towel boys and lots of colorful folks. Definitely a "family" beach as "no alcohol" is posted... but the "rusty nail" grill on the property is the "happening spot" where you can get a drink. (a strong one at that.... I didn't care for how strong their drinks were... I'm not a drinker. Room service from the Rusty Nail was also available. Also, just 4 block from the out door "mall"

Room Tip: All rooms are good... but the ones by the resteraunt are a bit noisy when the live music (guitar and singer) go from 5-9 pm but the TV easily drowns it out if you don't want to hear.

My wife and I decided to make a trip north to Mass., Maine and Vermont from Virginia Beach to visit family and friends with no particular route in mind. On the way we decided to visit Ocean City Maryland, then catch the Cape May/Lewes ferry. It was a great choice as we really enjoyed the ferry ride. Never having been to the Cape May we had no idea what to expect, what a pleasant surprise. We decided to spend the night and picked the Beach Shack because of it's name, the Vacancy sign made it easier. The two clerks on duty were the best and I regret that I cannot remember thier names but it was the evening of July 6, 2012. They put us in an awesome room with an incredible view and provided us with all sorts of information and insight about the area. We will be returning to the Beach Shack, regardless of the ridiculous fees charged to use the beach. It was only one night but we enjoyed every minute of it.

Room Tip: Third floor gives you a great vies of the ocean.
