We had rented a motorboat before, but never for the whole day. We got a wonderful new giant pontoon boat to cruise around in. We were 2 small kids and 4 adults. We had a great time. The biggest downside was it was hard to dock due to its size.
the rental place is dated, dingy, and a bit chaotic. We took the temporary license exam online and passed. You do have to study! It was quite expensive. Over $300/day, but was a great experience.

We rented a pontoon for 4 hours (9am to 1pm) early August 2015 on Lake Winnipesaukee. There were 4 adults and 2 children (10 and 12).

We rented a beautiful, confortable and 23-foot Berkshire tri-toon pontoon boat (115 hp). It almost seemed brand new, was very clean, very confortable and worked perfectly. We were very pleased with it.

Most of the staff is students and is friendly and helpful. However it was an older gentleman that gave us the lowdown on safety and warnings about the lake. He does scare you a bit with the warnings about the dangers of the shallow areas of the lake, but that's his job so that you don't come back with a broken propeller or other damage (that you would have to pay for) and then be upset because you would not have been properly warned. We did ask one of the younger staff for more good suggestions of where to go.

Lake Winnipesaukee is like most lakes and their dangers, but is just bigger than most lakes. You need a good marine map (which is supplied with the rental), somebody who knows how to read it, and know how to drive a boat (you need a boating card from your state or from Canada). Give yourself 30 minutes of slow driving to acclimate yourself to the vessel, map and lake... and you are set to explore this beautiful lake. Keep an eye on the path locals use on the lake as a good clue (but never as a certitude)... and avoid following other renters ;) Since the Lake seems very popular, it is probably very busy on weekends, but was perfect for us on an August weekday.

We boated all of the Western side of the lake (from Weirs Beach, up to Meredith bay, down to Alton bay). Made sure we did both sides of some of the bigger islands, such as Governors Island (which has the most expensive real estate on the lake apparently) and Rattlesnake island. Had to do some sections at a good clip as we only had 4 hours (which turned out to be just enough for us). Only used half a tank of gas in that time, which cost us about $30 to refill.

Note: There are steep steps to walk down to the Anchor Marine rental office at the Winnipesaukee pier.

All in all a great day on an excellent pontoon rental!
