We recently booked a two night, two room stay at the Colonial Motel through Expedia. We found the rooms to be clean and comfortable albeit a bit old fashioned with sparse furnishings. They do their best to emphasize they are a family run business which implies a level of personal service superior to the big chains.

We arrived on a Friday afternoon on a holiday weekend. The next morning we woke up to snow and were excited to head up to the mountain for the tubing and adventure park. The snow turned to rain and the adventure park was closed for the day. So we were left with 2 hours of tubing. We arrived back at our rooms at 12:30pm. Our rooms had not yet been made up so we decided to go home since we really had nothing more to do. We understand it was our decision to leave early but their sign read "No Vacancy" and it was a Saturday, early afternoon, on a holiday weekend so we asked if they would be willing to work something out with us. We were hoping they would offer to refund us (minus the Expedia fee of course) IF they re-rented the rooms for the night. Or possibly comp us a room for the future in the off-season.

We were told the rooms were “ours for the night” and there’s nothing more they could do. That was a $250 loss for us.

We reached out to the owners after we returned with a polite letter about our experience. The mail we received wasn’t from a specified owner and had no personal greeting - it appeared to be a form letter with verbiage that indicated our letter hadn’t even been thoroughly read. She told us we should have addressed the problem with them at the time (we did) and then apologized for our “inconvenience”. Being out over $250 is a bit more than an inconvenience. There was no offer to rectify the issue. I wrote a polite response addressing everything but never heard back.

A family run place should have the flexibility to work something out so that it’s a win-win for the motel and customer instead of a “lose” for the customer. As a former small business owner, I understand both the need to run a profitable business and to cultivate customer good will. Ironically I think a big hotel chain would have been more workable in a situation like this. Experiences like this encourages us to stick to the chains.

We won’t be returning to the Colonial Motel.

As was indicated to the guest. Any cancellations or modifications needed to go through Expedia. As for why I did not reply to her email myself. I was out state attending my Fathers funeral.

The room is very clean, the bed was very comfortable, and the location of the room was fantastic. The baseboard heating was great, I really dislike forced hot air it dries out the room and field cold as soon as it shuts off. Our room never dried out and always felt warm and comfortable.

Very clean remodeled classic motel. Larger rooms. Easy unloading from your assigned parking in front of your room. Overall a great value in close walking distance to the village. We would stay there again.

A group of us stayed here in Oct, we had 6 rooms booked. The check in procedure was welcoming, well organised and prompt.

Rooms are comfortable, good size and everything worked. Management was very helpful when asked for advice.

Good value option for North Conway.

We were headed up to North Conway and had one night at a very expensive hotel and decided to do 2 nights and choose this one based on the price. We got room #6 which was a corner room. The room was cute and comfy. One queen size bed, mini fridge, tv and couple of chairs. The kiddo had to take a shower vs a bath since there was no tub but the water pressure was great. The front desk was friendly and they also had a furry greeter as well. It is in total walking distance of downtown North Conway. And shockingly there was less noise here than our expensive hotel. Would stay here again.
