“Decent place to stay in Jackson”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 March 2012

I stayed here with some friends a few weeks ago on our annual ski trip to Jackson. We usually stay at a friends house or at one of the AMC lodges. This time we decided to do something different and stay at this bed and breakfast.

We rented the rooftop cottage for two nights. It was a little pricey but it was nice for our group of five people. After working out the bill among the five of us, it really wasn't that bad and was very comparable to other places in the area.

The suite was really nice and was at some point renovated.

In case you're wondering about the layout (as I did because the website was NOT very clear), I will explain the layout. After you get your keys, you head up a flight of stairs. The suite is on the left. As you walk in to the suite, there is a shower on your left. The shower is small but definitely usable.

As you walk up a flight of stairs, you will find two bedrooms, a full bath (with a tub), full kitchen, and a living room. Most of the rooms had a TV and I was able to access the free WiFi network without any problems.

I was really surprised by the kitchen. There is literally everything that you will need to cook. There were pots and pans, cookie sheets, everything! All the appliances were clean. We did not use the kitchen much but it was nice to have that available. The only thing it lacked was a dish soap to clean your dishes (or dishwasher).

After a long day of skiing, we were able to relax by the fire downstairs in the lobby. The complimentary hot chocolate and cookies were a nice touch (though the cookies were hard as a rock).

For breakfast, the food was pretty good. Service was slow on the second day of stay but the meal was included in our rate so we didn't complain.

For dinner one night, we ventured out to the restaurant next door. The food was decent and service was excellent.

They have a pool which is converted into an ice skating rink during the winter. Bring your ice skates!

Overall, you can't beat the location and we had a great stay. We will definitely stay here again!

Room Tip: If you have a large group, consider the rooftop cottage.

I can't say enough about Whitney's Inn and its pub, The Shovel Handle.... Amazing rooms, amazing people, amazing food, amazing atmosphere, etc, etc, etc.... When I arrived i felt like a kid again, and when I left I felt like the owners and staff were family. I've recommended Whitney's to everyone I know, young and old, family's, and couples.... I WILL BE BACK!!! hopefully sooner rather than later...

We'd heard great things about Whitney's from a family friend, and got a chance to stay last weekend. Warm cookies in the lobby, cozy rooms, an ice rink, an AMAZING breakfast, and the most unique pub in New England - truly wonderful. It felt like a very personalized experience - not just your average weekend stay. The owner even visited with us at dinner to make sure the meal and the live music were to our liking. (Some advice: Try the Joyce Salad, named for his wife.) The dishes were well-prepared and hearty, and the ambiance is unbelievable. We will definitely be back!

We stayed here for one night with our dog. The dog-friendly room was very cute...decorated in Maine/outdoorsy fashion. The owner was very helpful and said we could leave her in the room alone as long as she was well behaved. Unfortunately the restaurant was closed that night...we picked the hotel because the restaurant seemed very cool...it's an old barn. We had dinner a few miles down the road which was fine...but definately didn't have the character of the inn's restaurant. The beds were very comfortable.

The next morning, we went to have our complimentary breakfast. We waited for almost 30 minutes and no one came out to take our orders. I finally called the owner (who leaves his number right at the front desk) to see what was going on. He said he would find out and fix the problem. After another 15 minutes of no one helping us, we left. The owner actually called us 10 minutes later and told us that his chef didn't show up. He was very apologetic and even refunded us our portion of the room that covers the breakfast. The fact that he cared enough to call us after we left and apologize put him high on our list. He truly cares about his business and his customers.

We stayed in one of the cabins on the occasion of our daughter's wedding. It was awful. When we got there it was damp and dark inside despite being a spectacularly sunny, warm day. I had to have the kid from the desk pry open the windows and sweep the porch. I wiped down the table and chairs so we could use the outside space. The sheets on the beds were very damp, and I had to strip the beds and air the sheets outside. The bathroom was miniscule. Fortunately we are a slim and fit family as there was NO room in the bathroom. There was no heat in the evening other than the electric fireplace. Our children froze in the tiny twin bedroom.
It was obvious, despite the fact that we had booked the cabin at the time we booked the wedding, that the cabin had not been used in a very long time, and they did not expect guests that weekend. There was no cleaning service during the weekend.
The breakfast was fine, good food and a nice atmosphere.
I saw many of the rooms in the Inn and they seemed okay in a rustic way.
Did I mention that our cabin was almost $300 a night? .

Room Tip: come first and check it out
