After 3 days of walking the busy crowded streets of Las Vegas hotels, we decided to take a tour of the nearby mountains that surrounded us. It is only a 30 mile drive. We chose the Pink Jeep tour. Within 5minutes we left the congestion behind. Our guide gave us some good historical info as we did this easy 15 mile loop. However, I would recommend renting a car, packing a lunch and taking you time to just breathe the fresh air. You can go off the trail and walk some easy paths. You could even have Uber drop you at the Visitors Center. Lots of info here. There are restrooms here as well as throughout the trails. Also a nice gift shop

I will echo some of the tips I got via Tripadvisor. We wanted to do 2 day trips in 1 day --- Red Rock Canyon (40 minutes west of Las Vegas) and Grand Canyon South Rim (2 hours east), so we knew we had to have an early start. We wanted to check out the Visitor's Center at the RRC but they open at 8 AM. So, we decided to make the Red Rock Canyon Overlook our 1st stop. It's outside the loop and early in the morning, the views are nice. There's a short hike from the parking lot.

From there, we headed to the entrance to the park. Fortunately for us when we visited, they were having a Naturalization ceremony at the Visitor's Center so they opened a little earlier than usual. We were happy we did not miss this part of the park though...it's worth a stop. It had a good view of the reddest part of the canyon. They also have a gift shop with affordable souvenirs.

Another reason to get there early, we found out, is that parking can be an issue. We were ok, but we can only imagine what it would have been like if we had come in later. We did not do any hiking, so we managed to complete the one-way loop in about 2 hours, and head east to the South Rim, where we arrived around 12:30 PM.

For being so close to Las Vegas, this is such a serene and beautiful area. Complete contrast to the lights a glitz of the strip, but nature at its finest. Beautiful with easy access to park a car at appropriate intervals.

My wife and I recently visited Red Rock. It is beautiful. The first stop on the scenic route is a great place to climb a little and take great photos. The Le Madre Spring hike is NOT worth it. It says 1.5 miles. This is very misleading. It is 1.5 miles to the fork, 1.5 more miles to the next fork and .5 miles to the spring. It is a high elevation change hike and round trip from the parking lot ended up being 7.2 miles. Luckily we are in shape but we watched people struggling with their family. The spring is a one foot wide trickling spring. Not worth it. There are some incredible photo spots on the hike though.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is a short drive from Las Vegas and a worthy side trip if you are in the area. It is a smallish NPS unit, but don't underestimate it- the place is beautiful. The geologic features of the park are visually stunning, and the numerous trails offer a great chance to experience the park up close and personal.

Some tips for visiting: It is a busy place. If you come mid-day, expect a line of cars at the entrance gate. The best time to come is early in the morning (it opens at 06:00). It is not as hot or busy then and that is the ideal time to hike. The afternoon heat and sun are relentless in the warmer months and will make hiking unpleasant at a minimum and potentially dangerous. Do the scenic drive, but also get out of your car and walk around even if you don't do a full hike. Your visit will be much more rewarding if you do more than see the park through your car windows. Take time to go to the visitor center. There are some nice displays and a short video to help you learn more about what you are about to see. Admission is $15 per car. The best value is to get the America the Beautiful Annual Pass, which costs $80 but can be used for access to nearly all NPS units for an entire year from the date of purchase. It pays for itself in no time if you visit parks. Buy the pass and get out and enjoy your National Parks, Conservation Areas, and Historic Sites!

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is a great place to visit and I highly recommend it!
