We have had many trips to Sicily (Palermo) as children as my Dad's family live there. This year, instead of invading Nonna's apartment, we rented Casa Urania. We were greeted at the Villa by Ruggero and he showed us around the villa. We had rented both apartments with both of them are fully equipped with everything you need (you could rent one of them independently if you required). If you have limited mobility then the ground floor apartment would be manageable as after you enter the initial couple of steps into the property, it is all on one level. The second floor apartment has it's own outside space with a large balcony, complete with sun chairs and an outside dining table. This villa really is value for money!
The photographs that the owners have posted don't do the villa justice. It is very clean, tidy and comfortable. We used the outside barbecue area a few nights, meaning we could spend time as a family and enjoy the lovely, well kept garden. At night the garden is lit up with little lights so we could continue the evening outside. All the bedrooms are air conditioned which was an essential factor for us when booking.
If you enjoy visiting the beach then you could walk there in about 8-10 mins. If you haven't ever been to Mondello beach, you won't be disappointed. It can get busy on the 'public' section of the beach however, some sections charge a small amount for the joys of not being disturbed by beach sellers or to rent chairs/umbrellas etc. I recommend exploring the different sections to find what meets your needs. On the main Mondello strip there are lots of bars, kiosks and restaurants. If you choose to walk further up you will find more choice but I doubt you will have a bad meal anywhere!
If you choose to rent a car then you can easily park 2 vehicles within the villa property which is secured by the gates typical to these villas. It isn't worth driving down to the beach though as you are so close and wouldn't find parking much closer than the location of the villa itself!
If you choose not to rent a car, close to the Villa is a butcher, minimarket, bakers and pharmacy. We used these a lot and they were reasonably priced too. It would be a shame not to visit the beautiful town of Palermo by bus, you can buy the tickets from the tobacconist in the main square (probably from other places too?) and then take a short ride into Palermo (on bus 806). This drops you off at the Politeama where most people will get off, where you can view lots of historic and beautiful buildings. You can also do some great shopping!
If you have questions whilst you are there, the owners were very accommodating. In fact we had some complications with our flight times and they happily agreed to let us stay in the villa for a few more hours.
If I was being critical I would say that finding the villa initially was a bit tricky. It is located on a very small single track road and unless you know where to look, it is difficult to find. I recommend clarifying directions with Ruggero before you leave for your own peace of mind. However, once we found it we were elated with the location as it was not too close to the bars but not too far from the beach!
In summary - we have a wonderful time and should we visit Mondello next year, we will definitely be staying at Casa Urania!
