We’ve been to quite a few art museums in this country and others, and too often, we feel overwhelemed by the sheer volume of visual stimulation. This is a good sized-museum. It’s a very nice place, relatively small, the art is well-displayed and well-lighted, and it’s never very busy. I especially like the room in the museum’s northwest corner highlighting Southwest art, and don’t miss the basement and the meandering art library down there! I appreciate that they allow photos (without flash), and the grounds are very nice.

Every now and then you come across a small museum at which you find yourself saying with delight: "Where has THIS place been hiding." You might find this to be one of them. The small but well-chosen collection is nicely and intimately displayed and provides a representative survey of paintings by significant American painters from the 18th to 20th centuries. I was surprised to find here two of the more frequently reproduced paintings in the United States: George Catlin's "Wi-Jun-Jon, An Assinneboin Chief" and Thomas Hart Benton's "Custer's Last Stand." The Albrecht-Kemper is definitely worth a stop if you like American art and are in the area.

The Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art in St. Joseph specializes in American Art - it's permanent collection is quite impressive for a small museum. It also has two gallery spaces that are used for temporary exhibits. Its well worth a visit.

Sometimes you just have to stop and read the small sign that says: Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art. Originally, this magnificent building was home to Mr. Albrecht who owned Western Tablet Company--home of the Big Chief tablet and so much more. Now the Mead Corporation.Later, it was converted into a gallery. The grounds alone are beautiful. Weddings and picture ops are a key feature. The art is very nice, with local artists given a nod. They also serve a very nice lunch.

At first you think it's someone's stately home, which it was, years ago. Then once around the back in the parking lot the entrance is visible.
Beautiful pieces are on display both historic & contemporary, including students of Thomas Hart Benton.
