The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is the cultural jewel of Kansas City and just three blocks from the Country Club Plaza, and admission is free. The Nelson-Atkins, recognized as one of America’s finest art museums, strives to be the place where the power of art engages the spirit of community. This museum has cool architecture with an old part that feels very stately and a new part that is very modern, light and airy. They also have a very nice courtyard where you can enjoy lunch, tea or a snack. They have a very nice collection here with a lot of variety.

So many things to see here for, you, your family, or visitors. The absolute place not to miss. Take anyone that loves seeing history, arts, or cultures. Learn, prospective, enlightenment, and be enchanted. Large beautiful space to walk and enjoy the arts at its finest. Please go, I highly recommend this wonderful place in KC.

For those who are members of the "fly-over crowd", there are other world class art museums not named The Met or The Getty. The Nelson-Atkins is such a museum. It's collections are extensive, varied and of world class quality.

One of the things I like best is that the Nelson-Atkins has beautiful, well maintained exhibits throughout the museum. In addition it generally has at least one or two "special" exhibits all the time. For example, one time we visited, the museum's special exhibit was of items from various World Fairs going back to the 18th century. Exquisite glass, magnificent carved and inlaid wooden furniture, silk clothing items from 12th century Japan, all the way to mid-century modern pieces from Frank Loyd Wright, Phillip Johnson, clothing from Yeves Saint Laurent, Chanel and Cartier. Astounding collection of art and artifacts from around the world. A true tour de force by the Nelson-Atkins curators. Just one example of the type of exhibits you will see.

If great art is of any interest at all, don't make the mistake of not putting this museum on your list of must-sees when next you visit Kansas City. It's at least as good as the bar-b-que.

We joined the Friends of Musum when went to see the Pollock/motherwell. Well worth it! Already paid for itself as we just got back from seeing the Jade exhibit. Plenty of parking under garage. Very large place. Lot's to see. Restraunt was very good as well. Highly recommend it and will return soon.

We were staying less than a mile away from here so three days in a row we went and wandered around. What a lovely museum. And such a lovely Christmas tree and nativity.
