San Agustin Archaeological Park is a definite must-visit on any trip to Colombia. The surrounding area is beautiful and full of fascinating, ancient history, some of the oldest in South America. And it has some of the world's best coffee. And possibly South America's best hostel in La Casa de Francois!

The park itself is reasonably priced ($10000, but if you plan on doing a jeep tour to any of the other surrounding sites like Alto de los Idolos, then pay the $16000 to enter all sites), and a guide can be arranged when you pay your entrance fee. The trails are well marked, and the signs are informative, and in both English and Spanish.

It's also well-worth doing a horse tour to some of the more inaccessible sites - it should cost around $40000 per person with guide (but we were 2, so a larger group would be cheaper). Go official, some guides may be cheaper, but they are less well-informed, and some will offer to sell you a lovely bit of (grave-robbed) gold to 'remember' your trip!

All in all, it's a great trip, and an amazing insight into some of South America's Pre-Columbian civilizations.

When in Colombia, a vist to San Agustin Archaeological Park is a must ! I stayed 4 nights in San Agustin - very nice and quiet village! The visit to the archaeological park is only possible by foot (around 5 hours walk) or by riding a horse ! So, although I am not an expert in horse-riding, I ventured with a trained and calm horse, with a local guide riding along with us! The weather was wonderful and it was a great adventure - the stone figures of around 300 BC were all very nicely spread in the Park and the fantastic scenery along all the way is indeed unforgettable !

Inka Pilgrimage with my daughter Susie:
Further away from Bogota, we ventured to the ancient site of San Agustin, where the civilization of San Agustin left fantastic statues and sculptures of their culture. To get to some of the sculptures, Susie and I rode on horses with a group of Irish ladies. Susie and I survived the thrilling and fast horse ride. Lucas was a good guide, making sure we had the right horse and had a safe ride.
After the horse ride through the picturesque countryside of San Agustin, Susie and I paid for a private guide named Luis Salazar, who took us around the archaeological site and showed us all the fantastic statues and sculptures. He explained everything he knew about the statues and the ancient civilization. He was definitely an expert, especially since he worked at the site for several decades. He was interested in writing a book about his knowledge of the site.
This UNESCO site is definitely worth visiting. The horse ride is a must for adventurous tourists who want to see how expansive the site is. Also, make sure you hire a tour guide to show and explain everything about the statues.

We drove to San Agustin from Neiva. A beautiful drive through several picturesque towns. A stop in Pitalito at the "Vargas Muñoz" shop is a must for beautiful ceramic crafts. The park is very intersting but be prepared to walk! There is no handicap access. It is helpful to have a guide to explain the various statues. Ask at the ticket kiosk. Have lunch at "Donde Richard" on the road to the park. It is easy to arrange tours on horseback to see more remote statues and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
