San Agustin Archaeological Park is a definite must-visit on any trip to Colombia. The surrounding area is beautiful and full of fascinating, ancient history, some of the oldest in South America. And it has some of the world's best coffee. And possibly South America's best hostel in La Casa de Francois!
The park itself is reasonably priced ($10000, but if you plan on doing a jeep tour to any of the other surrounding sites like Alto de los Idolos, then pay the $16000 to enter all sites), and a guide can be arranged when you pay your entrance fee. The trails are well marked, and the signs are informative, and in both English and Spanish.
It's also well-worth doing a horse tour to some of the more inaccessible sites - it should cost around $40000 per person with guide (but we were 2, so a larger group would be cheaper). Go official, some guides may be cheaper, but they are less well-informed, and some will offer to sell you a lovely bit of (grave-robbed) gold to 'remember' your trip!
All in all, it's a great trip, and an amazing insight into some of South America's Pre-Columbian civilizations.
