“Over-rated chalet”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 August 2009

Moustiers-Sainte-Marie is just 10-15 minutes walk up the steep hill from Le Clos des Iris, and restaurants, bars, supermarket, shops, etc. are all within reach. We spent some time around the reservoir lake of Ste Croix du Verdon, which takes about 15 minutes in the car. Here, we hired boats for the afternoon to venture up the gorge and take it easy on the water. Plenty of fun here!
Le Clos des Iris is set in a shady spot which catches the sprinkling of sun spots around the guest 'chalets'. On first impression the interior seemed pleasant enough with it's floral fabrics and cosy feel, albeit a bit small for two people, but this was quickly overshadowed by the most disconcerting attribute which was the lack of any air-conditioning and air circulation - everything in our bathroom was damp and clammy, creating a warm dankness throughout the hut. We had to use the insect plug-in here too, but without air movement this just made the room suffocating. We did not sleep well at Le Clos des Iris. We could also hear our neighbours using their bathroom, which did not bother us too much but it's not so easily ignored! Out of our 3-week tour in the south of France this was the only stay with such problems, and one of the most expensive.

We stayed in Clos des Iris for 3 nights in July, using it as a base to explore the Gorge du Verdon. Set a little outside (and downhill from!) Moustier Sainte-Marie, it is like a little secret garden with its rooms each having their own entrance from outside. We immediately loved the look of the rooms, which are simply but beautifully decorated. No hi-tech equipment or facilities, but a set up designed to get you to relax and take it easy. The hosts are unobtrusive, but all was efficiently managed, with rooms cleaned spotlessly and the ample breakfasts well presented. Moustier is an unbelievably pretty little village - no pictures we found on the web did it justice - and it was a joy to 'potter around' in. We ate in 2 great restaurants in Moustiers which we would highly recommend - La Treille Muscate and Les Compte.
Overall, we couldn't recommend Clos des Iris or Moustiers more highly - go!

Spent two nights here in July ... and loved this beautiful spot set amongst the trees. Great location for the Gorges du Verdon and town of Moustiers St Marie is very cute too. Rooms very clean and cute but also modern with a fabulous breakfast on our own patio. Great value at 80 Euro a night.

Romantic, very warm decorated rooms with seperate
entrances facing a wonderful garden. The owners left us choose our room(through the images of their site). We stayed in 'le levant' room at the edge of the garden.Very quiet, with your own chairs and table just outside the room,to enjoy the very generous 'petit dejeuner' or just a coffee.Very friendly stuff, well spoken english.Reasonable price.
We've been there for 2 days in our honeymoon(totally 2 weeks in south France) and we were very pleased
Just outside (3 minutes walk) Moustiers Sainte Marie is an ideal
base for the lake Sainte-Croix and the entrance of Verdon gorge as well.
If you want to discover the 'levantine' Provance or the breathtaking
Verdon gorge or even if you just want to go from Avignon or Arles
to Nice or Cannes avoiding the 'touristic' routes is a wonderful
idea to spend somes days in 'Clos des iris'

Very pleasant little hotel near Moustiers, with tres Provencal rooms and nicely done breakfasts (extra). Since our favorite splurge, La Bastide de Moustiers, had been going up 10%/yr for the past 6 years and the dollar had been going down 10%/yr, it had really gone beyond what we feel is reasonable (for us -- but if money is no object, it's a wonderful place to stay and eat -- Alain DuCasse has exceptional taste). So we had chosen this small place on the same road for a fourth of the price -- but fewer amenities -- no TV or wifi. Alexia was a charming host. Breakfast was very nice with yogurt and a slice of cheese in addition the the std French breakfast (which we love), served in a very Provencale breakfast/reception room. We had a couple of picnics on our terrace, one in the company of the 4 house chiens who were quite charming. It's really convenient to Moustiers and the Gorges du Verdon, where we rented a canoe for 10 euro (hour) and paddled up into the gorge -- they have leg-powered paddle boats, too -- near the bridge. We really enjoyed lunch (again) at Le Relais, a hotel-restaurant not far from the post office -- good food, service, ambience, and value. Moustiers is one of our favorite cites in France, with great faiance (hand painted ceramics) and Provencale fabrics at reasonable prices. We'll return.

  • Liked — clean, charming, good location, good price
  • Disliked — no TV or wifi (we were there during election season)
