One of the reasons I appreciate this island is that it's a place secluded from the hustle and bustle of the mainland. The ferry ride is about an hour long but the boats are very nice. One of them, the Capt. Pete, even has a handy water fountain. They all have concessions and bathrooms equipped. Fort Massachusetts is not very far from the landing pier and is a very intriguing place. I am under the impression that guided tours are available at certain times, but they're not needed unless you want to know the extensive history (which is fairly interesting- the island was sight of a civil war battle and was a confederate prison),

The beach is on the other side of the island. Thankfully, umbrellas as shade are available for rent. But unfortunately the walk to the other side of the island, across a long boardwalk, is very far. On the other side of the island is also a concession area with food and drinks (nachos, hot dogs, that type of thing). The eating area is under a shaded pavilion. The staff there were very polite. That being said, make sure you bring money with you. You're going to need food and drink, because the island is hot and barren. Of course, there are also bathrooms.

The beach is kind of crowded because its umbrella rentals are only available in a small area. But you don't have to walk to far to get away from the people- once you walk a little way up the beach, it's as if you've left civilization. The beach is pretty nice compared to Mississippi mainland- don't expect perfect water, but at least you can expect nice, natural sand and some OK shelling for the area. I highly suggest visiting- just don't visit in the hottest part of summer, like me. You'll get cooked.

It was an hour ferry ride each way to ship Island. My first time in Biloxi so one of the recommended things to do. Park rangers gave a nice history lesson about Fort Massachusetts dating back to war of 1812 where British launched its fleet to attack New Orleans but lost and also civil war where the island changed hand back n forth between union and confederate armies. Strategically, the 3rd tier Fort became obsolete in 1866 due to advances in weapons technology. We spent another couple of hours on the beach on a hot 100F day. You can enjoy the beach in Biloxi as there's no need to spend an entire day ferrying back n forth to ship Island (depart 9a and Noon, arrive back 3.30p and 6p). The ferry ride through ship Island excursions is $29 bucks each and $25 for umbrella and chair rental. The crew on the ferry and one shop on the island were polite and courteous. As I said earlier, It was ok for first timers but other then that, I won't recommend it.

Wonderful day trip! We took the Ship Island Excursion and had friendly service. We rented chairs and an umbrella and felt like we were at a resort! Moderate exercise because of the walk to the beach, but it was worth it.

The ferry ride out there is about 1 hour. Saw some dolphins. When you get there it is quite a hike to the other side where the beautiful beach is. There is a cool fort to see on the way. If you want protection from the sun you need to rent an umbrella and the food at the concession stand is quite expensive.
