“Huge disappointment”
Reviewed 4 January 2012

As I now live in England with my husband and children, a visit to Grand View Lodge was the perfect setting to show off the best of what the North has to offer. From horse and wagon rides, to laser tag, to Ski Gull only miles away, to bonfires and so much more, we never ran out of activities for the children. However due to the horrendous accommodations we were given, it was impossible to relax. Upon first impression of our cabin was a large beer sign, inappropriate for a young family! That was just the tip of the iceberg. The bathrooms smelled so terrible of human urine that we were all gagging. The children's bedroom had an awful stench as well, and we are still unsure of what that was. The kitchen was only clean on the surface, when we opened cupboards and drawers, things were filthy. The heating system did not work properly e.g. the lounge was freezing cold and the bedrooms were sweltering. The fireplace doors were broken meaning we were unable to light a fire to counteract this problem (can't have an open fire with toddlers running around). The floors were never vacuumed, various other things in the cabin were broken, including the toilet. Things got to be so bad that we left one day early, mostly due to the stench of the cabin but also due to our children becoming ill from the poorly run heating system. The cabin was definitely a "bachelor pad" and kitted out for a boy's vacation. It would have been somewhat suitable for my husband and father, not my children. I expected fond memories to have been made, and some were. But when we all look back at this experience I know we will not be keen on revisiting Grand View Lodge anytime in the near future. We expressed all of these complaints to the staff, and were reimbursed for the night which we did not stay, rightly so. However, I feel that the low rating is due to value for money, and expectations which were not met. I asked for photos of the cabin two months before our stay, and they were never sent. Additionally, all that was told of the cabin was that it was not updated, and absurd under-exaggeration. I don't ever leave these types of reviews, but I just really do not want anybody else to have the same experience as we have had. The property is lovely. It could have been just so much better, and I am so disappointed.

Room Tip: Do not stay in cabin 146!!

First of all, we want to deeply apologize for your experience. The cabin you stayed in, is the only one within our 200 accommodations, which is decorated and meant for golf buddies and boys weekends, thus the numerous TVs, beer signs, pool and foosball tables. It is our policy to never book families into this cabin as it is not meant for a quiet, family vacation. This oversight is disappointing to us, and we sincerely apologize for your experience. As you could see from the rest of the property, we cater to helping families create wonderful memories and we try to make sure everyone’s vacation is a special one. This was a mistake on our part and we would like to make it up to you and your family. We hope that one day you will reconsider and return to Grand View for the true experience we cater to.

Our stay between Christmas and New Year's was exactly what we were looking for in a vacation with kids ranging in ages from 7 to 17. Plenty of things to do for everyone and the adults were lucky enough to get a table at Cru for dinner which we found to be high end service at an affordable price. We stayed in Roy Villa 614 and found it to be plenty of room for all eleven of us. They have thought of everything in the villa including a blender for our margaritas! We were relieved to know that the local ski hill makes their own snow so even without mother nature's white stuff our kids were still able to take advantage of learning how to ski. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a place with outstanding service.

Grand VIew Lodge is a perfect family experience away from the Black Friday crowds and the beginning of the rush of Holiday gift buying.

We always leave early Black Friday morning for Grandview which is a lovely drive up 169 to 18 to 341 (our favorite way north).

Grandview has a wonderful swim area with slides, zero -depth-entry pool, water games etc.

The lodge is a beautiful large pine structure with a grand fireplace, cozy bar/restaurant downstairs. A wonderful view of the lake while eating breakfast (which is included this weekend) makes the line for buffet worth it.

They have an Aveda Spa on the grounds and you are even able to book a spa/condo weekend for a very reasonable price.

Now, why we go every Black Friday? The City of Nisswa Lighting Ceremony. The whole town turns the lights out and at the count of 10 at 5:30 (I think) all of the Christmas lights turn on at once.

Have you ever seen Groundhog's Day? Uber Americana? Yes, that is truly Nisswa. With a grand marschall on a speaker in the middle of this idillic MN town, horse & sleigh rides around the town, warm cider and cookies (free), the Grand Announcement of Santa Clause arriving (and a line a block long to tell him your Christmas Wishes), and finally a sense of what Christmas-of-yore was like in MN, in what you remember from being a child. MN with a toy store, candy store, an Irish Pizza Restaurant :) not to mention Minnesota Chilli (you know, not spicy - like Mom or Grandma used to make).

To end this wonderful evening they have a Fireworks finale.

I can't wait to go back!!! We started going before having children and before Grandview also started to use the "Groundhog's Day" simularity and now we have 2 children whose highlight of the year is going to Grandview Lodge, Nisswa.

What a wonderful tradtion to make memories. :) Thanks Grandview!!

Thank you for the wonderful review. Thanksgiving week up here is a beautiful time of the season and the city of Nisswa does an incredible job with their City of Lights Festival. Also the Sertoma Winter Wonderland is a fun family activity too which starts the same weekend. We look forward to your return and wish you and your family a happy holidays.
