This was our most expensive stay on our week-long trip. I was disappointed. The room was nothing special. There was a leather or faux leather occasional chair with no lamp by it for reading; however, after sitting in it, I wouldn't have used it anyway. It was like a rock! The towels were nice quality-thicker than most motels.
The check-in was awkward, young Chinese girls who seemed confused and the process was chaotic. They seemed unsure of most of what they were doing and had a lot of trouble getting into the computer.

The key cards were finicky and didn't work right away--apparently an issue as others were going back to the desk for a fix.

For the hefty price, one would think they would encourage gambling at the casino. We got 2 $5 vouchers. The cards didn't work right and that was a pain. We promptly lost the $5 for each of us and left.

On Friday and Saturday you have one choice for dinner-a $19.99 buffet. I eat a 1/2 cup of potatoes, a few pieces of meat and a salad--why would I pay $20 for that? The only other choice is a "Deli" - more high-priced food that is frozen and heated up. There is no where else to eat in Grand Portage.

Breakfast in the morning was decent and prices were comparable to elsewhere.

Our party of 2 stayed at the hotel for one night while visiting Grand Portage sites. Near to Grand Portage National Monument and High Falls.
Reception staff were very personable, and our double queen room was clean and comfortable. The restarant was closed for renovations, but the cafe worked for a light meal.

Location is excellent, great view right on the lake, clean and comfortable. That being said there was a couple things i was un happy with. The first was every day i had to get my keycard reset which was a hassle and apparently and ongoing issue. The other issue is they drained the pool on Labor Day weekend which seemed like poor timing.

Out of the way. Poor, very poor, dining. Bar...Well, a bar is a bar. Evidence of construction everywhere. The staff was, about half the time, unable to understand basic English (Work program from the Philippines, by one account). Dining room closed the day after our arrival--we were not told about that. The ONLY reason that we stayed after our initial exposure was the fact that the ferry to Isle Royale is nearby--next closest accommodation is 35 miles away--not quite close enough for a 6:45 AM takeoff from the ferry terminal.

Takeaway: 1) gamble in Vegas or Reno, 2) dine at McDonalds, 3) Travel to Isle Royale from Michigan

Room Tip: lakeside offers a good view

Grand Portage Lodge, Casino, restaurant, and shop(s) is in a beautiful, albeit remote spot on the north coast of Lake Superior. It is also the takeoff point for day trips to Isle Royale National Park (open summer only). That is its good point.

Rooms are pleasant and comfortable, although minimally serviced--if one doesn't put out a "make up room" sign, the room will not be serviced. The casino has a sinister appearance--dark, gloomy.

The politest term for the restaurant is "it has a great view of Lake Superior." The food is mediocre at best, and indifferently served. The wine list is sparse and mediocre.

Room Tip: Lake view rooms are reserved for high rollers.
