Great location for visiting Grand Portage National Historic Site! The hotel is located right on the shores of Lake Superior and is walking distance to the monument! The only down fall is the limitation of restaurants

We stayed in "cabin" 6 (it was a small house!). Right on Lake Superior, the sounds and views are stunning. Semi-private lake shore (shared with the dozen or so other cabins), this small resort is well worth the extra miles up the shore. Pretty clean, well stocked. Plenty of space with two bathrooms, a separate bedroom, large loft, and fireplace. The twin bed in the living room was a welcome bonus.

Check in is at the Grand Portage Lodge and Casino a few miles up the shore. We happily left that busier environment for the peace and quiet of Hollow Rock.

Room Tip: Many of the cabins are right on Lake Superior, one even surrounded on 3 sides!

As soon as we entered the lodge, we were hit with the smell of cigarette smoke. However as time went by, you didn't notice it so much. The entrance way is very beautiful with the large fireplace and the view of the lake which they capitalized on.

We stayed at the lodge for one night and were very pleased with our lakeside room on the top floor (3rd). The view of the lake is beautiful but it was a big disappointment that the windows do not open any longer. (It was always a pleasure to hear the waves at night or the rain.) The new fridge in the room is almost too small to put anything in! And the coffee in the room was very weak.

We ate in the bar at lunch and had the quesadilla special which was very good (for some reason the bar is always extremely cold!); and we had dinner in the main restaurant. The special was Chicken Ojibway and it was very delicious. (I have to say that we really, really miss not having the pizza on the menu - we would often order one to take home to Thunder Bay!)

We did have a sauna which was very nice - but did not venture into the pool.

Overall, it was a very pleasant stay - although I was hoping to give it a better review.

We liked the room, it was a good size and had a view of the lake. But the smoke in the lobby, casino and even the restaurant was too much. I wouldn't go again. The restaurant had a nonsmoking section right next to the smoking section, no wall, nothing to prevent the smoke from ruining your meal. The hotel was on the lake, so had nice views and plenty of space to walk around outside. The bar served the wine in plastic cups so you could escape the smoke and go outside.

This is a small casino & hotel in a rural area. Loved the lake view, the rooms were clean and the staff was very nice in both the casino and hotel. Keep in mind that this place is small and has only one restaurant and a snack bar. Make sure you know when they serve meals, as it is not 24/7 service. We went for a drive while we waited for the restaurant to be open again (closed from 3-4 pm) on the Friday we stayed. We really liked the Walleye breakfast; the evening buffet was okay (Friday). They have a small fire pit and seating area plus new kids play area in the back, but they are remodeling there, as they have lots of room. The slots paid well while we were there and they called our names during the Friday drawings (our first time, but we joined the club to obtain Senior perks on Thursday, including special hotel rate). This hotel is close to the boat for Isle Royale. We found the place very relaxing, close to beautiful scenery, hiking, etc. Near the border, if you are headed to Canada. Ask about their Wisdom Steps program when you call.

Room Tip: Lake view was beautiful. They are remodeling out back, so ask about potential noise before you confirm your location.
