Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: Finished in 1908, this Lake Superior 39-room mansion enjoys a rare, intact collection of original furnishings and art. Because of that, it closely resembles the days when the Congdon family first occupied it. Truly, it is Duluth's answer to Downton Abbey. Situated on a wooded lot, the home boasts spectacular views of Lake Superior, as well as, multiple gardens including formal, flower and vegetable. Guests are also encouraged to explore the carriage house, boat house, stone bridge and pier. Children enjoy the pebbled beach for hours of rock skipping while parents take in a sit on one of Adirondack chairs. Be sure to check out Glensheen as part of your must-do Duluth bucket list.

“Beautiful old mansion”
Reviewed 21 February 2012

Make sure to read up on the history of the home, especially the murders that happened in the 1970's. They make no mention of this on the tour...but everyone on our tour was wanting to ask which room it happened it. It is like the "elephant in the room" so to speak.

“Over and over I love this place!”
Reviewed 20 February 2012

I enjoy this place no end I have been here with 4 of my kids on school trips, taken my mum twice on Mothers day and taken friends from out of town often. It is a beautiful house with a family story and heartbreaking history. It never gets old, the kids that act out the place in the summer are well trained and do a good job, the guides that help you in the winter are as interesting, the gift shop rounds things off with books and articles about the place. Well worth in the money, best in summertime if you want to see the grounds and gardens.

“Enjoy a slice of the good life.”
Reviewed 7 February 2012

The variety of tours available make visiting this American Palace always a new experience. The story of the family, the process of building this home, and the fabulous furnishings are well worth learning about. In the summer the ability to walk the gardens, lawns and relax along Lake Superior shoreline adds to the overall enjoyment.

“Beautiful old masion with lots of history”
Reviewed 7 February 2012

Great place to get an idea of how the wealthy people of Duluth used to live. Lots of wonderful period furnishings. Also fun to see the advanced "technology" that was built into the masion at the time it was built. In addition, the grounds are beautiful to walk around, as well as down to the Lake Superior shore.
