“Great location, very good accommodations, but awkward hospitality!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 October 2010

The location was exactly what we were looking for. Tucked away in the woods, on the lake for a quiet stay. We stayed in the upper suite in the main house. It had everything from in-room whirlpool, sauna, large walk-in shower, private deck, mini fridge & micro, and ample living space. The layout was a little strange, the stairs a minor inconvenience but all-in-all a very nice space.
There are hiking trails in close proximity for nice walks through the woods and around the lake. The area the house is located on the lake isn't great because it is in a little bay that gets choked with lily pads. So there aren't swinmming opportunities, but they did have kayaks and row boats to take a cruise around the lake in. From what I saw, it had great potential for fishing.
The only real adverse experience was the awkwardness of any interaction with the innkeepers. They live in the basement of the main house, so to get there attention if not present on the main level is to call down the basement stairs, which felt a little strange. Also from reading a prior review to our stay I knew of a odd situation with room keys so I was prepared. Upon check-in we were shown to the room and not given a room key. When we were leaving to go out I had to ask for a key to lock the room. I may be an over-cautious city boy, but I like to lock my room with my things in it before leaving. Finally, the breakfasts. They were very adequate! If you are looking for the typical gourmet b&b breakfast you will be disappointed, but David does do his best to give you whatever you need. It by all means was not bad, just adequate. The dining room and kitchen are one large room, so you get to watch him cook your food. Again a little awkward from past experiences. The lady of the house was rarely seen and when she did acknowledge you was polite. The two just seemed out of their element. Not the typical outgoing innkeepers. Because they haven't been doing it that long I hope they grow into it.
I would definately recommend it to a friend, giving them definite heads-ups on cetain issues to expect.

Lake, boats, fishing poll, jacuzzi, clean & spacious rooms, fantastic breakfast, friendly host. This place offers everything you could want in a B&B Lodge. Close to shopping and restaurants, but far enough away to not realize it. Hope to return next Fall.

Eight family members occupied all 4 rooms/suites at this lovely B&B to celebrate my parents 60th anniversary -- and it was an ideal choice for that purpose. Melanie and David could not have been more accommodating in any way, both in the preparation and during our visit. They cooked scrumptious custom-ordered breakfasts at the time each of us specified, and then dealt unwaveringly when most of us showed up at the table at the same time. We also made arrangements in advance for them to prepare the celebration dinner, and it was the best meal we had the whole trip. The table was beautifully set, 3 different entrees prepared to perfection, and it gave us the quiet and privacy we wanted for the meal (which is more than I can say for any of the local restaurants -- they were consistently very loud).

The setting is beautiful -- peaceful and quiet, located right on Lake Dubonnet. Some of us enjoyed using the canoe that's available, and others of us enjoyed sitting on the porch swing admiring the view or reading. Sleeping Bear sand dunes is about a 40-minute drive, and Traverse City about 20, so they're within easy range. Interlochen Music Camp was closed for the season during our visit, but it's about 5 minutes away.

The common area is comfortable and cozy, with a huge tv (we enjoyed a movie from the library of videos one evening) and a long table that easily accommodated the 8 of us. The sleeping rooms range from simple and small to very large and elaborate, and all are furnished comfortably, including tv, refrigerator and microwave. The smallest is the Navigator suite, which has no closet and a tiny bathroom with a shower stall. Next is the Vineyard suite, a spacious room with double closets, a day bed and a desk area. Upstairs is the Bay Chalet, the fanciest of the suites, with a bedroom, separate sitting area, fireplace, private hot tub, and sauna -- and a double-headed shower large enough for all eight of us at once (no, we didn't). Last is the Pines Nature Cottage, which is upstairs in a separate building -- it's a two-bedroom suite with a full kitchen, eating area and sitting area.

I could not imagine a more idyllic spot -- we had a wonderful celebration, much of it due to the exceptional service we received from Melanie and David. Thanks for memories I know will be long-treasured!

We opted to stay here rather than at Lake Ann Camp for their Ladies Retreat. We were met by friendly hosts and treated to a fabulous breakfast each morning. The Vinyard room was spacious and comfortable with a private bath. We also enjoyed the nearby walking trails. We are looking forward to visiting again next year.
