If you're looking for nifty, cool hole-in-the-wall place that has the ambiance of a speakeasy, Brew Merchant in this city's Washington Square "uptown" is it.
Serving a rotating selection of micro brews from around the state and beyond, select wines from hither and yon, as well as hand-crafted cocktails, B-M is the place if you just want to get away for a quiet cocktail and conversation. Food? A few snacks, but you are welcome to grab some "take-in" pizza or entrées from the terrific Italian Restaurant/Deli across the street. Even my wife, who doesn't like "noisy bars" loves to come here for one of Chris' (the tall blond proprietor guy) special blends. There's even "hand-crafted" music on select nights.
And if your group needs to gather, the side space dubbed "Merchant Hall" serves as a venue for a Monday night "Pub Theology" exchange, a bi-monthly Thursday evening Alternative Rotary Club spot, an occasional League of Women Voters chat, and a host of small fundraisers and idea exchange confabs. This place is one that prides itself on "serving" the community above and beyond the excellent beverages it offers.
