“Exactly as it is named, a beautiful Wilderness!”

Wilderness State Park

Drove all through the park and stopped in many places along the beach, checked out some cabins, and they are in the wilderness! The campsites are as close to the water as you want them to be, and the trails go way back into the wild, and close to the shores of Sturgeon Bay (Michigan). If you want to get away (and who doesn't) and back to nature, be prepared to share anything you drop or leave behind with the wild animals of the north woods! The name describes it perfectly, and you are a good 12 miles, nearly 30 minute drive from the closest community once in the park.

We came after Sept 1 so dogs were allowed on the beach. Beautiful view of the mighty mac and 2 lighthouses. Also saw two freighters go by. Relaxing and had the beach almost to ourselves.

Picture relaxing in late evening on a secluded beach to the sound of waves gently lapping on the lake shore, a celestial spectacle overhead, surrounded by pine forest. That's Wilderness State Park situated 15 minutes west of I-75 near Mackinaw City, MI. The park has sites for tents, camping trailers, and cabins along with showers, restrooms and even a station with air and water pumps.

Reservations are available online or at the park and rates are very affordable. The park is on the edge of Carp Lake near the Straits of Mackinac that connect Lakes Michigan and Huron. The park offers a boat ramp, miles of trails for hiking and biking and is in close proximity to popular destinations like Mackinaw City, the Mackinac Bridge, and Mackinac Island. It's also near one of the few International Dark Sky parks maintained by Emmet County, Michigan that is a favorite spot for star gazers.

The area is terrific in spring and early autumn with crisp nights and warm days.

We camped at this park for 2 nights. Our site was #69 and we were steps from the sandy beach with it's lovely sunsets. The campsites are a bit tight and you have to watch for the trees when you back your trailer in. All in all in was a nice camping experience. The park is beautiful but the big 2 negatives for me were the barking dogs and the showers. The 3 co-ed showers lack privacy since they are actually stalls with outside doors. No heat, dark and pretty nasty. Wear your flip flops if you must use them.

Visiting the area we stopped by to stretch our legs and get a nice walk in. There are many trails in this park, well maintained and at each trail crossing there is a map making it almost impossible to get lost. You could hike all day if you wanted.
