My mother passed away recently and her last wishes were to have the memorial service held in Williamstown, MA (her home town). Fall is a busy time in the Berkshires and I knew finding availability the weekend of October 29th would be difficult. Fortunately, I called the 1896 House and was connected with Denise Richer. She was fantastic in helping me find rooms for family members and plan a lunch after the service at the 6 House Pub on the property. Due to availability, we had family members in the Barnside Suites as well as the Brookside and Pondside motel. All the rooms were clean, nicely appointed, and exactly as the website describes them. We also learned how thoughtful the Inn staff were when we were caught in the early season Noreaster (heavy wet snow storm). The staff provided an emergency kit of candles, food, water, and instructions to the guests. In summary, Denise and her staff ensured we had a great experience under difficult personsal as well as weather circumstances.

We made a 3-night reservation on the strength of internet information and a phone call to the property from our home in Pennsylvania. We chose Room 206 among the Barnside suites and had no regrets. It was spacious, comfortable, and very clean. The porch was attractive and provided a covered walk to the terrific, made-to-order breakfasts prepared by Dolores, our most friendly morning hostess. She could not have been nicer!! Her meals were varied and each very delicious, topped off with freshly baked muffins. Yum! The Pub was also handy and a place for good meals and friendly people. Airdales Leala and Cambri and black cat Cano were friendly animal hosts on the larger property, pets of the owners. Location was great for visiting the Berkshire area. Though right on Route 7, the property "feels" more remote with a stream running through the property. We heard no road noise. It was very quiet. We hope to return in the future.

Room Tip: We thought the extra paid for the suite was a good value for a special occasion and included the fabulous breakfast.

This was my third stay at the 1896 House-Barnside with my husband. It is our place to go for a one night getaway from the small children in our lives. ;) It is a perfect motorcycle ride from Metrowest Boston, where we live. We love 1896 House for so many reasons. This time we were able to get a room last minute. We have stayed in 201 twice, and this time stayed in 206. All the rooms are lovely. They are so spacious and luxurious. The beds are comfortable. The fireplaces and sitting areas are relaxing. The rooms have jacuzzi tubs and large bathrooms. There are televisions. Right outside everyroom is a sitting area on the porch with comfortable chairs. The rooms are a very short walk to the restaurant. You can get a drink at the bar and bring it back to your room or porch. Room 201 has a kitchenette with dining table. Room 206 is closest to the most adorable babbling brook with footbridge going over. The brook also has Adirondack chairs that are perfect for sitting and thinking or reading a book. In the morning, you eat breakfast in Room 200. The sweetest woman, Delores, makes a hot delicious meal. Yesterday it was a veggie omelet with onions, broccoli, portobellos, tomatoes and fresh local cheese. There are also continental options like toast, fresh fruit, yogurt, fresh baked muffins, juice, etc.

The inn is only a few minutes from the center of Williamstown. We like to get up early and ride down to Tunnel City coffee shop to get coffee and chat with the locals/visitors. When we visit in June it is quiet, but this time since school was in session the shop was active. There was a small farmers' market across the street. There are several cute shops and restaurants on this street, but it's by no means a large town.

The '6 House restaurant is a great place to eat. We usually start out at the bar with Anthony, the bartender. Then we venture to the outdoor patio with firepit for dinner. The food here is great. It's casual, and they offer all different options. My husband loves the steak. The salads are large and fresh. The service is always friendly and prompt.

The owners of the inn are very nice and hospitable. I can't say enough about this place. It is perfect for a romantic getaway or come with some friends. We can't wait to return.

Room Tip: All rooms are great, but 206 is the corner room.

We stayed in one of the Barnside Suites for a weekend (Fri/Sat night). The room was absolutely beautiful, and the extra "add-on packages" made our weekend trip extra special. The candlelight breakfast far exceeded our expectations. We wished we could have stayed an extra day and we're already talking about "when" we go back. The staff (particularly the owners) were very attentive to anything they could do to make our stay better.
