We stayed in a king suite adjacent to the restaurant. The room was spacious and beautiful. We were impressed with the large bathroom and whirlpool tub. The breakfast was delicious. We will definitely be back!

Overall a good experience. Nice location and ambiance, very good free continental breakfast, and a better than average pub. But..our Brookside room was dark with poor lighting and a musty odor, and some sort of insect kept appearing in the bathroom.

My wife and I along with 2 friends decided to take a 3 day trip to Williamstown for some R&R and the 1896 House looked like the perfect setting. IT WAS!!!! We stayed brookside - the room was older but very clean and well maintained. A few reviews mentioned moldy smelling rooms but that was NOT the case at all. We were a bit leery about that but NOT true at all. The staff were very friendly and the service top shelf. We used the restaurant for take out and that too was excellent. I would highly recommend the 1896 House - very relaxing and great atmosphere.

Room is older, but comfortable. The best thing is the location, which is right next to a brook, and it is extremely quiet and relaxing. The only sound all night was the brook and, once, an owl. Would stay again.

Room tip: Try to get the far left end. Rooms 117 or 116. More isolated, further from parking and the road.

This property is a far cry from a Country Inn. The Brookside is a 1950 retro Motor Inn or MOTEL at the best. The first thing that hits you is the musty moldy smell of the room. Even with opening windows and using room deodorizer it was still over powering. If you have an allergy to mold (as i do) this is not a place for you. Next is the decor. Older, worn, but serviceable. Rooms are all ground level with doors directly to the outside. Bathroom was slightly updated but the caulking around the fixtures showed a sinking floor. Breakfast was in a separate building located across the parking lot and a small stream traversed by wooden bridge. While the Breakfast was adequate, it was the same each day. The Tavern/Restaurant connected to this property served a decent meal.
On the plus side, you are near Williams College, Library, Art Museum, and The Clark.

Room tip: Choose somewhere else
